Disappointment haunts Elon Musk as his SpaceX spacecraft was caught in footage exploding and falling back down to Earth in shambles. This was SpaceX’s second attempt to deploy mock satellites this year for it to be met with anguishing failure.
The spacecraft sadly exploded not even 10 minutes after takeoff from its starbase in Texas. It came into problems that eventually led to its demise.
The website released a report
SpaceX’s website released a report accounting for the Starship’s eighth test overall and second attempt to deploy mock satellites in 2025, reflecting on what happened during the test.
The un-crewed spacecraft suffered “a rapid unscheduled disassembly” on its way to space and eventually lost contact with ground control.
The report detailed what happened
The report explained that the Super Heavy booster “successfully lit its 33 Raptor engines and propelled Starship through a nominal first-stage ascent.”
It also added: “Approximately two and a half minutes into flight, the Super Heavy booster shutdown all but three of its Raptor engines as planned for hot-staging separation.”
The Super Heavy booster successfully relit but to no avail
The Super Heavy booster successfully relit 11 out of the 13 planned Raptor engines and performed a “boostback burn to return itself to the launch site,” only for its attempts to fail, and the ascent then took a fiery turn.
Several raptor engines were lost
The report detailed: “Prior to the end of the ascent burn, an energetic event in the aft portion of Starship resulted in the loss of several Raptor engines. This in turn led to a loss of attitude control and ultimately a loss of communications with Starship.”
The report also added: “Final contact with Starship came approximately nine minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement
The FAA released a statement that several flights in and out of airports were delayed due to a “space launch incident.”
The airports that were especially affected by the explosion were in Florida, including Miami and Orlando, as there were concerns about flaming debris, as reported by the BBC.
People share the debris falling online
Some people on social media spotted the spacecraft’s debris falling in the Bahamas, with some adding that they were taking shelter in fear for their lives.
One user wrote: “If NASA had the failure rate SpaceX does, Elon Musk would be firing everyone and Congress would be demanding to know where the money is going.”
SpaceX reassured that everything was fine
The website reassured that the spacecraft “flew within a designated launch corridor to safeguard the public both on the ground, on water, and in the air.”
In addition, SpaceX “immediately began coordination with the FAA, ATO (air traffic control) and other safety officials to implement pre-planned contingency responses.”
The debris is non-toxic
“Any surviving debris would have fallen within the pre-planned Debris Response Area. There are no toxic materials present in the debris and no significant impacts expected to occur to marine species or water quality,” the website added.
Should anyone find any debris, the website asked that they contact local authorities.
You live and you learn
“We will review the data from today’s flight test to better understand root cause. As always, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will offer additional lessons to improve Starship’s reliability,” SpaceX said.
“With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will help us improve Starship’s reliability. We will conduct a thorough investigation, in coordination with the FAA, and implement corrective actions to make improvements on future Starship flight tests,” SpaceX added.
