It’s no surprise that smoking is a serious health concern across the globe, with its potential to cause cancer as well as a myriad of other health issues and all, and it seems that some countries have had enough of seeing their people suffer for it.
Denmark is hoping to foster a new generation that’s unable to purchase cigarettes or other nicotine products, hoping their citizens will be better for it.
In a drastic pitch, Denmark is looking at banning the sale of cigarettes to an entire age group.

The country unveiled its plan to prohibit the sale of cigarettes and other nicotine products to anyone born after 2010, who would be turning 12 this year.
In a press conference, Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said it’s an effort to prevent the next generation of Danes from developing nicotine addictions.
Their current age of purchase for tobacco and e-cigarettes is 18.

However, they report that 31% of those between the ages of 15 and 29 still smoke.
“If necessary, we are ready to ban sales to this generation [born in 2010] by gradually raising the purchase age limit,” Heunicke said.
It’s a matter of great concern for the country.

Heunicke reported that smoking is the leading cause of cancer in Denmark, one that causes over 13,000 deaths a year.
And it seems that the public is in favor of this ruling, too. According to a survey commissioned by the Danish Cancer Association, 64% of citizens are in favor of this plan.
They also have their sights set beyond just tobacco.

Next, they plan on reducing alcohol consumption in young people. The current age of purchase in Denmark is 16, which they aim to increase to 18 later this year.
Country officials seem to really be looking at the roots of some major health issues among their people and are taking the steps to ensure a healthier future for everyone.
