20 Clever Designs That Make So Much Sense We're Wondering Why They're Not Common

One really cool thing about this world is that people are constantly coming up with really cool ideas and designs. Some of them are too cool, though, and should be more common than they actually are.

Like these really clever design ideas. How have we not thought of them sooner? And how long before we start to see them more often?

"This toaster has an 'a bit more' button on it."

This is kind of a mood. There have been countless times when I went to make toast, only for it to not be done enough. So yeah, I'm pretty into this "a bit more" button. I need it on my own toaster now!

"These chairs have little socks on as scratch guards."

The fact that, instead of using felt pads or something, they used cute little socks to keep the bottoms of these chairs from scratching the floor makes them so much more endearing. I kind of wish I had some for my home now.

"How the cleaning ladies prepared the toilet paper roll."

Maybe I just haven't been to nice enough hotels, but I've literally never seen anyone do this before. It almost seems like a waste, given where that toilet paper is going to go, but it's still a nice little touch.

"A bike stand built into a park bench."

This is such a clever use of a bench. Because people will ride their bikes in parks, and they'll probably want to sit at one of the benches at some point. And it'll keep the bike out of the way without letting it fall over.

"My Vitamin D tablet bottle had an 'actual size' picture on it."

I feel like this is a pretty good design idea to keep around. It may not matter to some, but knowing the actual size of the tablet may be helpful for others. I dunno, I just think it's pretty neat.

"This hybrid lamp/wireless smartphone charger I made for my design thesis."

I know that lamps that double as wireless phone chargers are already a thing, but not like this (yet). It's a great way to combine function with style. And as we know, when it comes to tech, aesthetics are kind of everything.

"These candles that came in a box have a small hole at the top so you can smell the candle without opening the box."

Arguably one of the most important things to factor in when buying a scented candle is how it smells. You don't want to go home with one stanky candle that you're never going to use, after all.

So yeah, this design is a total keeper.

"Restaurant toilets forces you to sanitise your hands on the way out."

There are people out there who... don't wash their hands after using the bathroom in a restaurant... and then come by and stick their hands in your fries. At least this will stop people from being gross in public.

"Office with bed for afternoon nap."

Alternatively, that bed could be used for people who end up sleeping in the office overnight (but hopefully it never has to come to that).

I think we should normalize taking naps in the middle of the day, even when at work.

"Every Vauxhall car built since 2004 have a hidden shark somewhere in the car. Found mine in the glove box."

Cool little details like this are what set some companies apart from others. I wish every car manufacturer would follow suit and put little Easter eggs like this in their models. It would make driving a tiny bit more fun, at least.

"This jar of mustard has a handle, so that after you finish the mustard, it becomes a glass mug with a handle."

I like the fact that this mustard jar already comes with a new function that makes it easy to recycle. I mean, it's a glass jar, so it would be easy enough to recycle anyway. But you can reuse this jar for as long as you want!

"Old dumpster turned into flower/tree bed with a bench."

I think this is a pretty clever way to use an old dumpster. Though... I didn't even know there was a point when you had to stop using a dumpster to hold garbage.

Unless this is just some kind of art installation or something.

"Yo dawg! I heard you like clocks so we put a clock on your clock."

I can't believe how unbelievably clever this is! Because of course, trying to find the perfect angle for your bedside alarm clock can be kind of tricky. This is literally the best of both worlds.

"This wheelchair accessible motorcycle we spotted a little while back."

I didn't know these were a thing, but I'm super glad they are! I'm kind of surprised I've never seen one before now.

Though, I'm sure the people who would use one already know they exist...

"The back of Samsung washing machines have a happy person on them."

Even though I'm, like, 99% sure that the happy person doesn't make the machine run any better, it's still a nice design to keep around. It's already put me in better spirits today!

"This little lawn especially for dogs to do their business."

It's kind of funny; usually you see signs on people's lawns that tell you not to let your dogs do their business on the grass. But this one is the exact opposite.

Now, if only the dogs will follow instructions and use just that spot...

"Kudos to Sanpellegrino for putting this lid so I can drink directly from the can without worrying about dust/dirt/microbes."

I have to say, I like the idea of this lid. You never know what's on the top of a can before you drink it, anyway.

Though, if it were made of something more recyclable, it would be even better...

"My hotel’s sun canopy is connected to a wind meter, which automatically causes it to retract when the wind speed becomes too high."

I think that's actually super cool! You literally don't have to do anything with this; just let the wind do its thing and let the sun canopy retract on its own. Impressive!

"Wegmans has a 'No Candy' Lane, so parents don't have to drag their kids past a wall of sugar if they don't want to."

If you're unlucky enough to have to take your kids grocery shopping with you, then you probably know the pain of taking them through a checkout lane full of candy. This No Candy Lane is actually super thoughtful.

"The bags are colored blue for cold groceries."

That's actually pretty handy. That way, you'll know which groceries need to be put away as soon as possible.

And in places that don't sell plastic bags, they could just print something on paper bags to show which one has cold stuff in it.
