15 Things That Happened On Movie Sets That Sound Fake (But Are True)

Life is stranger than fiction, and those bodes doubly true for those of the Hollywood elite. Sometimes, things happen on movie sets that simply defy logic or any kind of rational explanation.

To get a better understanding of what I'm talking about, I've compiled a list of 10+ things that happened on movie sets that sound fake — but are actually true. Have a look, you won't believe it.

Benedict Cumberbatch was kidnapped on his way to film *To the Ends of the Earth*.

Benedict wasn't on set when he was kidnapped, but he was en route to film a scene.

After stopping to fix a flat tire, Benedict and his group of friends were suddenly surrounded by six armed men. They drove around with Benedict for a few hours before finally and inexplicably letting him go.

Martin Sheen nearly died filming *Apocalypse Now*.

Martin began experiencing severe chest pain in the middle of the night. He crawled to the road and was finally picked up by a public bus.

The iconic actor was then taken to the hospital and was actually given the last rites by a priest.

The director of *The Exorcist* hired a priest to perform a blessing on the set.

Since many believed the set of The Exorcist was haunted, a priest by the name of Thomas M. King was brought in to bless the cast and crew in an attempt to quiet the spirits that supposedly were haunting the set.

Jim Carrey was trained by the CIA for *How The Grinch Stole Christmas*.

Jim says that putting on the makeup made him feel as if he was being buried alive.

To help him cope, director Ron Howard hired the same people that train CIA operatives to withstand torture.

Robert Pattinson was really masturbating in *The Lighthouse*.

What's even stranger than that is it isn't even the first time that he's done it.

To date, Robert has pleasured himself on screen in a total of four films and not once has he simulated the act.

A central prop in *The Possession* was mysteriously burned after filming.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan explained that production had put certain props in storage in case they were needed for reshoots.

“It burnt to the ground," Jeffrey explained. "It was investigated, and there were no signs of arson, no electrical fire.”

Peter Mayhew needed protection while filming *Star Wars: Episode VI - The Return Of The Jedi*.

That's because George Lucas had elected to film in the Pacific Northwest.

The actor who famously played Chewbacca had to be escorted by a security team, for fear that hunters might mistake him as Bigfoot.

The production team on *Poltergeist* used real skeletons for the final pool scene.

If you think that's creepy, what's even worse is that they didn't tell their actors!

Talk about a toxic work environment. If it was me, I would have walked off the set right then and there.

Jim Caviezel was struck by lightning while filming *The Passion Of The Christ*.

While filming the crucifixion scene, Jim was suddenly and unexpectedly struck by lightning.

Director Mel Gibson didn't realize what had happened until he noticed that Jim's hair was on fire.

The cast and crew found claw marks on the set of *Annabelle*.

Director John Leonetti told The Hollywood Reporter that "It was a full moon, and there were three fingers drawn through the dust along with the window, and our demon has three fingers and three talons."

Vic Morrow was decapitated by a helicopter on the set of *Twilight Zone: The Movie*.

You sadly never know when tragedy is going to strike.

While filming one of the film's final scenes, the stunt helicopter pilot lost control and crashed, causing the deaths of Vic, as well as two child extras.

Brandon Lee was shot and killed on the set of *The Crow* after a blank round misfired.

During one of the gunfight scenes, a blank round somehow managed to go off and fire through the chamber of one of the prop guns.

Brandon was killed and a body double had to be brought in to complete filming.

The original Tin-Man in *The Wizard Of Oz* had to be recast due to mercury poisoning from the silver paint.

The silver paint originally used by the prop team was made of pure aluminum dust, which basically meant that Buddy Ebsen was slowly being suffocated.

He was hospitalized nine days later and had to be confined to an oxygen tent.

The majority of the *Titanic* cast were poisoned with PCP.

According to reports, someone laced a communal bowl of chowder with the mind-altering drug. The experiences of those affected seemed to vary.

While some felt nothing at all, others were forced to induce vomiting so as to try and end their intense trip.

Isla Fisher came very close to drowning on the set of *Now You See Me*.

She explained during an appearance on Chelsea Lately that she was trapped underwater for three whole minutes! "I was actually drowning," Isla said. "Everyone thought I was acting fabulously…no one realized I was actually struggling."
