Less than 24 hours after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was admitted to hospital to treat his COVID-19 symptoms, he has been moved into the intensive care unit, the BBC reported .
Johnson, 55, seemed to be in good spirits when he entered the hospital.
He tweeted that he had gone to the hospital “on the advice of my doctor for some routine tests.” However, according to a U.K. government statement, his symptoms have since “worsened,” requiring a trip to the ICU.
“Since Sunday evening, the prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus,” the statement read.
“Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.
“The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication.”
