No offense to all the bankers out there, but having to deal with a bank is one of the most tedious things in the world. It’s like they’re constantly making you jump through hoops just to do the simplest of things. Not to mention all the random fees that seem to come out of nowhere.
One Reddit user tried to withdraw all the money from a bank account so he could close it but got met with some pretty annoying fees and processes. So instead of doing any of that, he simply played the system in a surprisingly petty way. And then he shared that story on the Malicious Compliance Subreddit.
The User, Creepy-Analyst, Posted The Short But Sweet Story.
After Moving To Michigan From Pennsylvania, OP Didn’t Need The Bank Account Anymore.
He shares that he’d moved all but $1.31 from his account a few years ago because the bank was making it hard for him to withdraw the full amount. Two years later, he gets a notice from the bank stating that he’d incur a fee if he left the account inactive for more than two years. Basically, he’d be charged $5 every other year so that the bank could keep his $1.31.
But at the same time, he didn’t want to close the account because it would mean paying a fee too. Instead of paying any money, he simply withdrew $0.01. Now, he plans to do this every couple of years to keep the account active, meaning he’s good for the next 260 years.
Other Users Were Very Impressed With OP’s Form Of Malicious Compliance.
In fact, a lot of users had more tips on how they could be extra malicious toward the bank. One user suggested depositing the one cent back into the bank by mail, which would force the bank to pay postage fees. Which would, obviously, cost a lot more than a single penny.
But That Wasn’t The Only Suggestion OP Got From The Comment Section.
In fact, users throughout the comment section were coming up with ways to not only keep the account active but to force the bank to pay more money for it. To think, it could’ve all been avoided if they just let OP close the account.
And Of Course, Some Users Had Their Own Stories To Share.
It’s nice to know none of us are alone in having to deal with annoying bank issues. Even nicer to know that people have found creative ways to game the system!
