Actor Ariana DeBose has made history. She is the first Afro Latina , openly queer woman of color to win an Academy Award for acting.
DeBose won the award for best supporting actress as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed West Side Story .
Ariana DeBose won the Oscar for ‘West Side Story’, and let me tell you, she deserved it.

And her speech…it was GOLDEN. If you think I was crying…well, you are RIGHT.
“Imagine this little girl in the back seat of a white ford Focus.” she began.
“When you look into her eyes you see an openly queer woman of color, an Afro Latina, who found her strength in life through art. And that’s what I believe we’re here to celebrate,”
“So to anybody who’s ever questioned your identity ever, ever, ever, or you find yourself living in the grey spaces, I promise you this: there is indeed a place for us,” she added.
Well deserved!
