But I guess the conflict here is between you and your husband. And it’s a NAH situation at the moment, if I read the situation right.

Fred was so far out of order, shouting at a woman defending the kid he was bullying, that there is no way your husband can stay friends with him without undermining your parenting efforts. This is not the kind of thing you ignore, and it is not the kind of thing you allow someone to do to your kid and partner. As parents, you have to show consequences, and that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable. If nothing else, then to teach your stepdaughter that it is OK, and necessary, to have boundaries – and that you guys will help enforce hers.

Your husband is not the a**hole if he is dragging his feet on this, or if he wants to try to find some compromise where the friend apologizes to everyone involved and stays away from the rest of the family. Whether that is possible or acceptable is something you need to work out together.

I don’t know how the conversation with your husband went, and there are definitely ways you both could have been a**holes to each other – going straight to an ultimatum, belittling the problem, refusing to compromise, etc. But you are not the a**hole for defending your stepdaughter, or for demanding this have consequences.
