After almost three years of marriage to Miya Dickey, Marques Houston finally opens up about why he married a woman nearly half his age while spilling some weird comments.
Speaking On Red Flags

American R&B singer Marques Houston’s recent interview with Page Six revealed some rather shocking information about the star. The singer told the outlet that he sees single women with children as red flags.
“A red flag to me [was] always with a woman that had a kid. Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me.”
Defending His Marriage To Miya

In July 2020, Houston made an Instagram post defending his marriage to the then-19-year-old Miya. In his defense, they started dating when she was legally an adult.
Respecting Single Moms

Continuing his interview with the publication, the 41-year-old singer talked about his respect for women who raise children independently. He said, “I tip my hat and respect women that are raising children on their own. But when I grew up, I never really wanted to have kids.”
Pep Talk From Dad

The Immature group member spoke about his dad’s advice about women having “baggage.” In his words, “I would talk to my dad a lot, and he would always tell me to have your own kids because you never know what the baby daddies are about.”
Sticking To Young Ladies

The singer continued with his dad’s words, ‘So if you’re gonna have kids, make sure it is with a woman that never had kids.’ Adding, “So that was always my red flag… and a woman with an attitude. I don’t like women with funky attitudes.”
Missed A Disaster

Talking about his wife, Houston implied he is comfortable with his wife and that marrying someone his age would be disastrous. “I’m 41, she is 22. I could’ve married a 44-year-old woman, and it could’ve been disastrous.”
A Different View On Life

The Favorite Girl singer explained why marrying a woman his age would be disastrous. He said they tend to be “too” independent, which he doesn’t like. “Women that are my age…they kind of have a different outlook on life. Like a lot of women my age are very independent.”
He Is A Provider

He adds, “They are very like, ‘I don’t need a man to do this for me ’cause I can do it for myself.’ I come from a generation that I love to provide for my wife.”
Reflecting On Past Relationships

Marques also hinted at a pattern he had followed in all his past relationships. “There’s a lot of women my age I’ve dated, they may have baggage.” Adding, “They may have kids, they may not. There’s so many different women I’ve been with throughout my life, and it just so happens to be that this one [Miya] caught my heart.”
Perfect Miya

Ending his praise about his wife, Houston says Miya is everything he wants in a woman. The R&B singer also mentions that although his wife is pretty young at 22, he also has a youthful spirit.
Social Media Takes
Since details of the interview came to light, Houston has faced a series of backlash from critics on social media. One tweep called him a “weirdo” and questioned what type of conversation he would be having with someone that young.
How They Met

While Houston’s marriage to Miya Dickey gets closer to the 3-year mark, the pair first met in 2018 through a mutual friend at a Jehovah’s Witness convention.
Marriage And Family

Houston and Miya tied the knot two years after meeting in August 2020 at the Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona, California. By 2021, the lovebirds welcomed their daughter, Zara, in December.
More Recent Criticism
Still on the critics on Twitter, @Patiencexx4 referred to Houston’s behavior as being sick, and he should stop trying to explain being a pedophile.
Marques’ Defense Statement
Houston writes in his 2020 Instagram defense statement, “Miya and I didn’t start dating until she was an adult. We fell in love and got engaged in March of 2019. My dad Michael loves her, and the people I am closest to all love her as well.”
He added in the caption, “No twists, no turns, no scandals, just true love. There is nothing that can come to light, because there’s no darkness in my life. You wanted the truth. I don’t have anything to hide, so if you’re waiting for something else, you will be waiting for ever.”
Alleged “Groomer”
Another tweep called him a “groomer” for dating and marrying someone so young at the time while advising his PR team to keep him from speaking openly.
His Career Beginnings

In his interview with Page Six, he recalled his days in his previous music group, Immature , and the backlash he faced. “In the Immature days, we [would] have light-skinned girls in our music videos. Then people would question… ‘Why can’t you get a black girl?’ And then it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, I only like light-skinned girls.'”
Endless Critics

It seems Houston has always had critics on his neck. He also highlighted how he was attacked for not having plus-size girls in his videos. “Then the plus-size girls will come and get me. I was like, ‘Man, I can’t catch a break.'”
No Response Yet

Since his interview with Page Six and the backlash that followed, Marques Houston has yet to respond to any criticisms on social media and it is unlikely he would give a statement.
