President Donald Trump has been talking about a third term, and now there’s merch for it. His official Trump Store is selling bright red “TRUMP 2028” hats for $50.
It doesn’t seem like a joke either. Eric Trump is even shown wearing one in the listing. That alone is making people pay attention.
Trump says he’s serious about a third term
In a phone interview with NBC News on March 30, Trump made it clear he wasn’t kidding.
“I’m not joking,” he said when asked about a possible third run.
“A lot of people want me to do it,” he added.
“I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
He hints at ways to subvert the rules
Trump also said there might be a way around the current rules.
By the time his second term ends in January 2029, he’ll be the oldest president in U.S. history.
But he mentioned there are “methods” he could use to make a third term happen.
The constitution currently blocks a third term
Right now, the U.S. Constitution doesn’t allow it.
The 22nd Amendment, passed in 1951 after FDR’s four terms, limits any president to just two terms in office.
Trump doesn’t explain the methods
Trump didn’t explain what those “methods” actually are.
But his supporters have been tossing around different ideas on how it could be done.
Amending the constitution would be one way
One option is to change the Constitution itself, but that’s extremely difficult.
It would take a two-thirds vote in Congress, or two-thirds of U.S. states agreeing to call a constitutional convention.
Neither path is likely.
Another option involves Vice President J.D. Vance
There’s another idea floating around too.
If Vice President J.D. Vance runs and wins in 2028, then steps down, that could create a way for Trump to return.
Political allies are backing the idea
Some lawmakers are already pushing for this.
Just three days after Trump was sworn in for a second term, Congressman Andy Ogles from Tennessee introduced a resolution in the House to allow a president to serve a third term.
Steve Bannon says he’s working on ideas
Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist, says he’s already working on plans.
During a March 18 interview with Chris Cuomo on NewsNation, Bannon said, “I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is.”
“I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run and win again in 2028,” he added.
“We’ve had greater long shots than Trump 2028.”
Trump first joked about a third term in 2024
Trump first mentioned the idea back in November 2024, while speaking to House Republicans in Washington.
“I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we’ve got to figure something else,’” he said, and the crowd laughed.
