Luigi Mangione, accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will be back in court on Friday, April 18. This time, we will not get to see what he looks like.
Mangione is supposed to be back in court on April 18
He’s the guy accused of killing Brian Thompson—the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. But here’s the thing: if you’re watching the case and waiting to catch a glimpse of him, that’s not going to happen this time.
He could face the death penalty if convicted
The 26-year-old convict is dealing with some heavy federal charges of murder and stalking. Prosecutors say he shot Brian Thompson right on a Midtown Manhattan street back on December 4.
If he’s found guilty, he might actually get the death penalty.
But every time Mangione shows up in court, people can’t stop talking about how he looks
People online and in the courtroom have been noticing every little thing, trying to figure out if he’s trying to say something with what he’s wearing.
Last time he was seen in court, he was wearing a green sweater and a bulletproof vest
Back in February, when Mangione showed up in court, he had on this green sweater. Apparently, some people thought that was a shoutout to his fans, since they made up the whole Luigi-from-Mario resemblance.
This time, no one will get to see him
Mangione’s earlier court hearing happened in New York State Supreme Court, where cameras were allowed, so people got to take some pics of him. On Friday, though, he’s showing up in federal court—and they don’t really allow that. No photos, no video, nothing.
The convict has earned himself a fandom while he’s in jail…
Somehow, Mangione’s turned into this unexpected anti-corporate hero for a bunch of people who disapprove of the healthcare system. His court dates keep pulling in crowds, with fans showing up to court to back him or maybe just to see him in person.
And this might be a shocker, but… A fundraiser for his legal defense has already pulled in over $900K so far! Crazy, right?!
And he’s quite grateful for the support
The only time Mangione’s spoken out so far was back in February. He said he was “overwhelmed” and “grateful” for all the support coming his way.
Not to mention, Mangione is also Diddy’s jailmate
Right now, he is locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while he waits for trial. Funny enough, that’s the same place where Diddy’s being held for the sex trafficking charges.
Luigi’s mail is actually flooding with love from his ‘fans’
He’s been getting so much mail in jail that it is going a little out of hand. His lawyers actually had to step in and ask people to chill.
He even received a heart-shaped note which got everyone talking even more
Things got pretty heated in court after they found a “heart-shaped” note tucked inside a pair of socks at Mangione’s February hearing.
His lawyers say the death penalty push is actually political
Mangione’s lawyers are trying to block the Justice Department from pushing for the death penalty. They’re claiming that Attorney General Pam Bondi’s move to go for capital punishment is just a “political stunt.”
