Let’s be real, here. Life is kind of expensive . Sure, there are plenty of things you can do or buy that don’t have to cost you a lot of money . But there are also some things that seem needlessly overpriced .
And yet, despite not being the best deal, we can’t help but pay for those things anyway. At least, that’s how these Reddit users see it .
“Death expenses.” – InitiativeOptimal619

Not to discredit morticians or anything, but sometimes it feels like dying is more expensive than living.
Another user shared their experience with a recent loss: “My mom just passed and the cheapest package for her burial was starting at 12k. Then throw in her final medical bills. It’s insane.”
“Pretty much anything having to do with the wedding industry is exorbitantly expensive.” – CreativeLizard55

“I couldn’t believe the prices when being quoted for the venue, cake, photographer, the church, dresses and tuxedos, the rings, the [expletive] props, etc..”
I think a lot of people just want that fancy party more than anything else. It’s like a status thing or something.
“Food and beverage in a stadium or at the movies. 10$ for a beer or 15$ for popcorn…” – Apprehensive_Bet_438
They know we’re going to pay because they ban outside food and drinks. A scam for sure, but not really something we can avoid.
“New College Textbooks.” – SuvenPan

In my experience, you buy brand new textbooks during your first year, and then figure out you can just buy them used for every other year you’re in school. Or, you might just skip them altogether.
“Bottled water.” – lookinforbobo

Some people live in places where the tap water isn’t drinkable, and yet they have to pay for bottled water, which is unbelievable. Also, some people pay for expensive mineral water when they don’t need it.
“Most subscription services.” – SketchThePhate

Another commenter added, “Most services shouldn’t really be subscriptions in the first place. Looking at you, Adobe .”
Remember when you used to buy the software once and had access to it for the rest of your life?
“Apple products.” – PerpetuaI_Foreigner

To be fair, a lot more electronic companies have been jacking up their prices. But it’s pretty clear that most people who buy Apple stuff do it for the same reason they go to Starbucks or have expensive weddings.
“Diamonds.” – throwra1nce

Diamonds aren’t even actually rare. In fact, the only reason why they’re so expensive is because a company called the De Beers Group basically monopolized the industry and made them seem like the ultimate love and status symbol .
“Printer ink and toner.” – seafoamteal

If you work in an industry that forces you to do a lot of printing, I feel really bad for you. Ink is so expensive for, like, no reason at all.
“Everything to do with playing golf.” – tiltedslim

Another user said, “I have a fancy driver that I spent big on and a #2 hybrid that I bought used for cheap. Can’t get a shot straight or far with the fancy driver but I can crush a ball dead straight with my used hybrid. Golf is strange.”
“Appliances.” – litsalmon

“Take away all the connectivity gadgets and the basics have hardly changed at all in the last 25 years or so, maybe more. A refrigerator is still an insulated box with a compressor. An oven is still an insulated box with heating coils.”
“Red Bull, you can buy energy drinks that taste almost completely the same for a fraction of the price.” – Shadow_NX

A commenter replied with, “The Aldi generic is pretty damn close by me a 4 pack is $5 my husband drinks the sugar free one and says he can’t taste the difference.” Good to know.
“Any fast food can pretty much be made cheaper and usually better after a few tries.” – Duckedaboutit

Fast food used to be cheap and convenient, and now it’s just expensive (and still kind of convenient, depending on who you ask).
“Designer purses.” – Specific_Arrival3181

“It’s one thing if they are well crafted and a design that you’re passionate about, but they are just massed produced and are no longer art.
“And yet I have like 12…”
“Petrol/gasoline.” – Jack_In_Black89

“It’s a necessary evil, though. Can’t afford an electric car, and cycling to work is unrealistic.”
Gas prices are wild these days, but for a lot of people, driving is really the only option to get from one place to another.
“Ben & Jerry’s.” – 00zau

“Store brand ice cream is better and 1/3-1/2 the price. The mix-ins are similarly low-quality; it’d be cheaper and better to buy stuff on the candy isle and mix it into a 1.5 quart container, and as a bonus you get to pick your favorites.”
“Just got back from a higher-end clothing department store and I cannot fathom why people buy $500 belts.” – UConnUser92

Just like with designer bags, designer clothes and accessories seem like they cost a lot more than they need to.
“Drawing tablets… Wacom is so overpriced it’s insane.” – Oscribble

“But nonetheless, I still buy from them because it’s a safe bet. But god, those things have no right to be as pricey as they are.”
“Insulin, epi pens.” – Prestigious_Tax7415

TheOneDiversity, the user who started the original thread, replied, “100% agree. My gf has diabetes. Luckily for her she has good insurance to cover most of the cost. But the fact something that’s so vital to a lot of people lives cost a fortune is ridiculous.”
“Tickets to Disneyland, including all the hotel and food fees.” – limppuleipa344

It’s amazing how people are literally willing to spend hundreds of dollars to go to a theme park for a day (myself included).
