When people say that makeup is art , they’re usually referring to when it’s done well. Makeup artists can do amazing things with a few brushes. Of course, that usually comes with practice .
Then there’s this list, which shows times when makeup artist really, really missed the mark. The poor people who went to them really had to walk home looking like disasters.
“Local British artist. That hairline and the same shade of brown for every. single. client.”

I remember back in, like, 2008 when people were getting tans and looking orange. This look really reminds me of that, and I don’t think the world is ready for it.
“A post about shade match, except there isn’t really a lot of matching going on.”

Everything about this is confusing. Is she the one saying “according to me”? Also, how is she going to match foundation when… she’s already wearing foundation?
“All of the makeup artist’s looks are like this! Their clients look scary.”

It… looks like a filter was added to this pic. But that’s extra baffling, because wouldn’t you want to advertise your looks without any kind of editing? Unless you know it doesn’t look good…
Something about this doesn’t seem quite right…

I almost feel like getting your skin to look this silver-gray is some kind of skill. Because, like, people don’t actually look like this. And that’s on top of how weird the rest of the makeup looks.
“Skin tone in the beginning of the video VS. Skin tone in the end.”

It’s totally baffling how people willingly make themselves look darker so they can pass off as a different race, and think it’s perfectly okay to do so.
“I really despise these type of lips.”

One Reddit commenter couldn’t help but say, “Is it just me, or do those lips look both sticky AND dry at the same time?” And honestly, I can’t stop thinking about that now.
“This has been all over my social media feeds lately. The artist has a booking site and charges $85.”

I really hope that poor woman went straight home after that. I also really hope she doesn’t own any mirrors. There’s just too much wrong in this.
“Watching Hoarders and noticed the color match of the Doctor’s foundation was off.”

It isn’t just the makeup artists you find on Instagram or TikTok who get it wrong; sometimes it’s a TV show’s makeup department! It’s amazing how so many people don’t seem to grasp the concept of skin undertones .
“This shade match hurts…”

Meanwhile, there are people who get the shade wrong altogether. Like, it shouldn’t matter how dark or light a person’s skin is, knowing how to make their foundation look natural should be the most basic thing a makeup artist knows.
“Say you’re British without saying you’re British.”

The look isn’t, like, that bad or anything. But it is pretty weird. Also, it would probably look a thousand times better if the lip gloss wasn’t so light or applied so liberally.
“They charge $350.”

This probably isn’t the worst look out there, though it still isn’t terribly great. But the worst part about this is the price. How could anyone think they could charge $350 for… for a look like this?
“Oh god.”

I think what’s making me laugh the most out of this is that it’s literally captioned with “soft and subtle glam.” Because there’s straight up nothing soft or subtle about this look. A little blending would’ve gone a long way here.
“MUA on IG with over 60k followers. Everyone in the comments was hyping this look up.”

The foundation is straight horrendous. Not even close to her skin tone. But the real tragedy here is the way the eyebrows look like they were drawn with a ballpoint pen.
“Contestants on a reality cooking show, having a sit down dinner. Assume there’s an onset MUA…”

I really, really need every television makeup artist out there to take a class in warm versus cool undertones. This poor woman was done so dirty.
“This is a MUA near where I live.”

To be honest, there are pics in this very list that show worse contouring. But this still isn’t very good. In fact, it’s pretty basic. It looks like something I could do (which is really saying something).
“And that’s a bride.”

The picture quality isn’t that great, but you can still tell that there’s too much foundation there. And the way it goes all the way down to the neck… all for this woman’s wedding, to boot.
“Good ol’ Facebook Marketplace.”

I seriously can’t tell what’s worse between the awful, orange foundation, and the awful, hot pink eyeshadow. But of course this would be a look that someone tried to advertise on the Facebook marketplace.
“Caption said: a soft Smokey look.”

On the plus side, this makeup artist might have a pretty good career as a special effects MUA. Because to me it just looks like this woman has two black eyes, not a “soft” smoky look.
“Oh dear…”

I may not be a professional makeup artist myself, but even I could tell you that this is just tragic. Why is the contour, like, not blended at all? And I don’t even want to think about the eyebrows.
“TikTok ad for eyebrow stencil.”

Believe it or not, there’s such thing as too much foundation. No one wants to literally look crusty.
I’m actually kind of terrified by this. Like, does the woman know that her brow looks like that?
