Those of you who have ever tried to become BFFs with your mother-in-law are well aware of her unique brand of psychological torture. But snooping? Really? Snooping is the nuclear option of family in-fighting, a horrible act that makes the story of Pandora’s box seem like a Disney musical. On the surface, it seems like something only a tiny handful of truly evil individuals would do. But it turns out that perhaps more than a couple of people among us have enough interior demons whisperings in their ears to make them consider such drastic actions.

Below, you’ll find a very strange and candid story that recently landed on the AITA subreddit , asking the community to decide if this woman was too cruel to her own family or if her mother-in-law and sister-in-law simply crossed the line and deserved punishment. Let us know your thoughts on this situation in the comments.

When MIL snooping turns out to be true, there’s only one way to handle it

Snooping is an age-old practice, but when it’s your mother-in-law going through your underwear drawer, it’s understandable why it would sting a bit. This woman’s mother-in-law has been exhibiting some suspicious behavior, so the woman set out a trap to prove her suspicion- which her MIL walked right into. Now she and her husband are asking if they’re the a**holes in this situation. Let’s dive into the comments and reactions to this story and see what people have to say.

Setting a “trap” ‍♀️

MiruTheSloth | MiruTheSloth

The comment author expresses that they are Not The A**Hole (NTA) in the situation, as the person setting the trap is not doing something as extreme or suspicious as hiding a dildo in a cutlery drawer. Replies include humorous comparisons to kitchen supplies, such as a battery-operated vibrator being sold as an immersion blender or a dildo as a hand mixer. Other replies provide comedic suggestions for their housemate’s bedroom antics.

OP ‘ed for keeping in own drawers!

OP was berated in their own bedroom by the mother-in-law for keeping personal belongings in their own drawers. Commenters were shocked by the level of entitled behavior and gave advice to OP to never let these people back into their life again.

The comment suggests that it’s not a trap, but simply the woman’s own drawer and her possessions. Replies echo the sentiment and argue that a draw in someone’s bedroom cannot be considered a trap. Most replies agree that the woman is NTA (not the a**hole). However, one reply claims it is a trap but is justified.

NTA! ‍♀️ Set a trap and find out!

National-Priority729 | National-Priority729

The comment defends the woman’s right to privacy, suggesting that a trap be set to confirm the MIL’s snooping. Replies pointed out the absurdity of the MIL’s reaction to her son and wife’s use of sex toys and the deep south Christian values in play. One reply remarked that the same concept of ‘Fruit of the Poisoned Tree’ applies to social situations, too.

‍♀️ MIL’s snooping & shaming!

MissionRevolution306 | MissionRevolution306

The commenter is NTA for being in the situation, and instead of supporting her, the husband is trying to shift the blame. The commenter recommends going no contact instead of low, as the MIL’s actions are a violation of her privacy and boundaries, and the family should not be allowed back in the house with their demeaning and invasive behavior.

It’s NTA and to MIL’s prying !

ConferenceDecent4222 | ConferenceDecent4222

Commenters agree that the OP is Not The A**hole and question why MIL is so interested in her and her son’s sex life. The comment replies point out that it’s inappropriate for MIL to invade the OP’s privacy, even if it’s in her own house and bedroom.

NTA sets a “trap”

SpaceCrazyArtist | SpaceCrazyArtist

The comment is not the a**hole (NTA) for setting a “trap” for her MIL, who was going through her underwear drawers. It is her house, and she has the right to put whatever she wants in her drawers. The comment also states that the MIL and SiL are gross, and that husband needs to apologize to her and put his mother in her place.

Algebralovr | Algebralovr

The commenter believes that the mother-in-law and sister-in-law had no right to go through the drawers of the woman’s bedroom. She suggests that the woman had not set a trap, but merely placed things in the drawer. The commenter thinks that the MIL and SIL are the a**holes here for snooping and reacting to the findings. She advises the woman to tell her husband to mature.
