Firefighters Rescue Deer Found with Soccer Net Wrapped Around Its Neck

Although many people tend to have a narrow idea of what firefighters do each day, they actually have a pretty versatile role in emergency situations.

In addition to their tendency to be among the first on the scene for life-threatening emergencies of all kinds, they end up taking on a lot of responsibilities that fall under the blanket term "other duties as assigned."

And while people often picture the classic scenario of rescuing a cat out of a tree when they imagine what these means, there are similar situations where animals get themselves in trouble that require a little more ingenuity on their parts.

And while it's unclear how one deer that was too curious for its own good ended up in a dangerous fix, the response from some Georgia firefighters certainly fit the bill.

On January 23, firefighters from Station 7 in Savannah, Georgia responded to an unusual yet perilous situation unfolding at a soccer complex.

As People reported, the call concerned a deer that had somehow gotten itself entangled in a soccer net.

In the words of a representative from the fire department, "Netting from the soccer goal was tightly wrapped around the antlers and neck of a small buck."

And while that would normally sound like a severe strangulation risk, the fire department reported that the deer had managed to stay breathing during this incident.

As their Facebook post put it, "The animal was alive but extremely exhausted and barely able to lift its head."

But while that exhaustion likely meant the deer wouldn't move around too much, firefighters still had quite the delicate operation ahead of them.

To carefully cut the cords from around the deer's neck, firefighters used wire cutters, a knife, and trauma shears that are usually used to quickly cut a casualty's clothes away during a medical emergency.

And while the deer's ordeal had drained so much of its energy, it was still able to move once it was freed.

As the fire department's representative said, "Once free, it wobbled a bit from exhaustion, then slowly trotted away."

As you might expect, the deer's rescue would serve as quite a crowd pleaser for the fire department's followers, with one commenter writing, "Thank you for saving the beautiful deer."

As another put it, "Thank you for responding with mercy and compassion."
