Former Hotel Worker Spills The Dirty Secrets Of Vacation Accommodations

Kasia Mikolajczak

Who here is looking forward to their next trip? Are you thinking of booking a hotel? Well, if you are, then listen up. This ex-hotel employee recently shared some secrets that you may find interesting or even shocking.

She's revealing them all on TikTok, and I'm going to share a few of them with you today. Check it out.

Janessa Richard used to work at a hotel, and she wanted to warn people about a few things.

Just so you know, this was all from her personal experience, and she stresses that it may not be the case with every hotel out there.

Having said that, she does say many people have experienced the same issues.

So without further ado, let's get into it. The first thing she shared I kind of suspected already, and it's that you should never walk on the carpet with bare feet.

Why is that?

Well, she says that the carpet does get vacuumed in between guests. But they are very rarely washed and deep cleaned. When it does happen, it's usually just once a year. OMG, yuck. I totally suspected that.

People in the comments said they bring flip-flops for this very reason.

Flip-flops, slippers, or extra socks are all good things to pack the next time you plan on staying in a hotel!

Okay, what's next?

Here's another shocker for you: Those duvets and comforters — well, they don't get changed between guests either. Oh, no! I always thought they felt a bit, you know, stiff. Gross!

It might be a good idea to bring your own blanket instead.

If not, then, I suppose you can ask the hotel to wash it for you? I hope that might work out in the end. I mean, they won't refuse, right?

The good news is that some hotel chains do wash the duvet and comforter.

One TikTok user confirmed that Hilton hotels do wash them, but some other chains do not. Use this information as you will...

Let's move on to the next yucky secret.

Most hotel rooms have a bottle of water and glasses you can use. Well, don't use them before you wash them first. They don't get changed between guests if they look like they haven't been used, okay?

The same goes for the toilet paper.

Janessa said the toilet paper is also not changed between guests. As long as there is still some toilet paper on the roll, the staff will just fold up the end into that little point and leave it for the next person.

Janessa also said a lot of shady stuff happens at hotels.

She said she and her coworkers once had to call the police because they learned some of the rooms in their hotel were being used by an escort service.

One interesting fact is that hotel employees are not allowed to say your room number out loud.

There are actually laws preventing them from doing so. The reason is to protect guests' privacy and that's why employees will write your room number down when handing you the keys.

Now that I've scared you off of staying at hotels, I have so good news.

Janessa also shared a few nicer tips. For example, if you ever encounter any problems, do speak to the manager. Chances are your room my actually get comped. Aha!

However, one thing to keep in mind is to be polite about it.

And speaking of that, if you are exceptionally nice, feel free to ask for a room upgrade. If the hotel isn't very busy, they might totally give it to you, free of charge.

So you see, with these tips I hope your next hotel stay will be amazing.
