Riding the NYC subway is, for some people, simply a means of getting around; however, for some people, it’s the perfect time to grab a ‘pic for the gram’ – a phrase I have never said before and will probably never say again, oh the things we do to appear ‘hip.’
One woman recently took her subway selfie game to the next level however, and a video that was posted on Twitter has since gone viral as she rallies through a series of fierce poses in the middle of a busy subway car.

Twitter user @jessiica_george had no idea that her display was being recorded when she uploaded her subway selfies.
In fairness, I had no idea that the lighting was so perfect on a subway car, but Twitter user @jessiica_george’s photo’s have enlightened me (get it, it’s a joke about lighting).
The video itself simply shows Jess striking a variety of poses in the middle of a busy subway car, but the internet’s reactions have been widely varied.
Jess’ selfie display was recorded and uploaded to twitter by Twitter user @benyahr, and the video went instantly viral.
The video has been watched over 8 million times over the last three days, and has had a wide array of comments from the Twitterverse (shock I know).
Most of the comments have been positive, with people flocking to gifs of Oprah and Beyonce to express their love for how confident she is.
Jessica was quick to thank Ben Yahr for his tweet, replying with the product of her selfie-ing (is that a word? If it isn’t yet it proably will be in a few years so if anything I’m just ahead of the curve).
It’s understandable that she would be thanking him as well due to the massive exposure his video garnered after he called out for his followers to follow her as well.
What a lot of people found funny about the video was the fact that the rest of the people in the subway car pretty much ignore Jess’ display.
Despite her flamboyant display, no one on the train even seems to ackowledge, or care, what is happening.
A few also expressed concern (my good self included) at the sanitary nature of the selfie.
No hand-gel was used in the acquisition of this selfie, and the public were in awe of this – and rightly so.
Jess had no idea that her life would be so drastically altered by one person filming her on the subway.
I occasionally think that I would become famous if someone could only catch me at the right moment, perhaps also on the subway. However, in reality, my hair is far from as put together as Jess’ and anyone looking to video me would probably just be thinking, ‘wow, look how knackered this fella looks.’
I mean, look how well her subway selfie sesh turned out!
The girl got more than 11,000 retweets and 78,000 likes for her shots, and although those numbers were probably helped out by Ben’s vid, you can’t say she doesn’t deserve them.
There were also, however, a lot of people who took a slightly more concerned view towards the video.
Several of Twitter’s devoted tweeters were quick to point out that it is slightly weird that a video someone posted of another person without their knowledge or consent has gone viral. There is a strange thing happening currently where other people’s videos of you can make you instantly famous (or infamous) often without your consent.
Thankfully in this instance, Jess was glad of the exposure the video received.
She even sent out a tweet to say so, focusing on all the positive feedback and totally ignoring the negs. Aww. Hopefully that will soothe the folks out there who were worried about her rights being violated.
Regardless of the reactions, I must confess that I wish I had half the body confidence that Jess does.
I can barely even consider changing a profile picture on social media without breaking into a cold sweat, and seeing a woman feeling so confident in herself is a great thing.
The concern that people have over the nature of her becoming viral-famous is justified though. Fortunately for Jess, she enjoys the reaction that the video has had, but it could have gone a very different way.
