Johnny Depp’s Former Co-Star Backs Depp’s Return To ‘Pirates’ Franchise

Many know Johnny Depp for being the star of five Pirates of the Caribbean films in which he portrays the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. However, in light of Depp's uncertain future with the franchise, there have been many people left disheartened by the news that the character will no longer feature.

One of Depp's former costars recently spoke out about how they felt the franchise would struggle without Depp's presence on screen.

Kevin McNally portrayed Mr Gibbs in all five of the 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' instalments.

McNally (above, right) has played the role of Jack Sparrow's faithful accomplice throughout all five of the current Pirates Of The Caribbean movies.

While promoting his upcoming movie Decrypted, McNally shared his thoughts on Depp's presence in the franchise.

"I've never seen a hint of any dark side to Johnny," McNally was quoted as saying.

"I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being," McNally said of Depp when talking with the Daily Express.

"I don't see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow."

McNally also went on to discuss how he felt the franchise could progress.

"I think there was a general feeling that without Jack there is no Pirates franchise. And there’s probably a lot of truth in that," McNally elaborated.

"But now there have been questions about that, certainly why not have other Pirate films and certainly then why not have Jack back or Jack playing a different part."

However, it seems as though the franchise will be going in a completely new direction.

Despite McNally's suggestion that, "You can certainly keep [previous character's] names alive, even in a film that doesn’t necessarily contain the [previous] characters too much," it seems as though the next instalment will seek to start completely afresh.

Even if he is not in the franchise, Depp seems keen to keep the character alive as much as possible.

In a press conference, Depp recently claimed, "I'll go to somebody's house, man, I'll perform [as Captain Jack Sparrow at your kid's birthday party at this point [...] I don't need a company to do that. I can just do that myself and nobody can take that away."

So, while Depp's passionate fans may not be seeing the character of Captain Jack Sparrow return to the silver screen, he may still appear out and about.
