Britney Spears' Father Files To End Her Conservatorship After 13 Years

Considering how long the conservatorship arrangement that Britney Spears must live under remained more or less unchanged, the past few months must seem like a whirlwind to both her and those in charge of her affairs.

After the grass-roots #FreeBritney campaign started by her fans and supporters picked up speed over the past year, Spears herself revealed just how restrictive and disheartening her conservatorship has been during an explosive court appearance in June.

Since then, Britney has been able to hire her own lawyer for the first time since this has all began and her father Jamie Spears indicated some plans to step down from his foundational role in the conservatorship, but it seems that we're now catching a glimpse of the biggest news on this front yet.

On September 7, Jamie Spears filed a petition to end his daughter's conservatorship arrangement after running her affairs and finances for 13 years.

As People reported, his court documents stated, "As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance."

But while Ms. Spears' lawyer Mathew Rosengart hailed this development as a "massive legal victory," he strongly disputes her father's stated intentions.

As Rosengart said, "Having exposed his misconduct and improper plan to hold his daughter hostage by trying to extract a multi-million dollar settlement, Mr. Spears has now effectively surrendered. There is no settlement."

For this reason, he is continuing to pursue an investigation into the elder Spears' conduct as conservator.

As the lawyer went on to say, "To the extent Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, he is incorrect and our investigation into financial mismanagement and other issues will continue."

As for what this all means for Spears herself, this filing brings her closer than ever to regaining independence from the arrangement but she's not quite there yet.

As is referenced in her father's filing, it is now up to the court presided over by Judge Brenda Penny to determine whether Spears' conservatorship is required any longer.

But seeing as both parties involved are now petitioning for its end, Spears may well be in her most hopeful position to date.
