People Are Putting Garlic Cloves Up Their Nose To Clear Their Sinuses

TikTok has become a haven for life hacks. You can learn everything from how to properly load a dishwasher or how to evenly distribute the melted butter over movie popcorn.

But recently, the trend has turned downright disgusting. All over the internet, people are now sticking cloves up garlic up their noses in an effort to clear their sinuses. The results seem to have most users (and some physicians) divided.

The internet is certainly a weird place.

Between viral trends, weird products and foods, and people giving their opinion when they maybe shouldn't, there are all kinds of things that are frightening on the internet.

Which brings us to our story of the day: people are putting garlic up their noses.

So, if you thought that things couldn't get weirder on the internet, you were most certainly wrong.

Before we go any further, let me just come right and say that you should most definitely not try this at home.

The videos all begin the same: with a person sticking a peeled clove of garlic up their nose.

However, if you happen to be one of those people who can't be swayed — at least be careful to not stick the garlic up too far.

From here, the waiting game begins.

Most of the videos recommend that you give the garlic at least 10-15 minutes in order to really do its job.

You should also be sitting stationary, with your head tilted slightly forward.

When the timer is up, carefully remove the garlic cloves from your nasal passage.

You should also make sure to be near a toilet or a sink.

I won't subject you to the horror show that I just witnessed, but trust me when I say that things are going to get very messy very quickly.

Most people who have tried it report feeling sinus relief, although some doctors aren't so sure.

According to Dr. Neil Bhattacharyya, M.D., "If you do this enough, the body will start to react to the oils and chemicals in the garlic and cause contact dermatitis in the nose."

So you better forego the garlic and keep reaching for the Claritin — just to be safe.

He added: "Some garlic cloves are really strong, and if you get enough leaching of the chemicals and oils into your nose, it will definitely irritate it."

Another doctor named Anthony Youn also said that this isn't the best idea for anyone to do.

He said that just because it feels like your sinus are getting cleaned, that doesn't necessarily mean that they actually are.

Garlic is just very strong.

Now, we want to hear from you.
