Bridesmaid Wants To Back Out Of Wedding After Bride Sets Her Up With Groomsman

Wedding planning has a way of creating drama.

A woman recently posted on Reddit to ask if she was being a jerk for stepping down as her friend's bridesmaid.

OP and her friend, 'Mary', have been close since they were children. Now that Mary's getting married and OP has been asked to be a bridesmaid, some drama has occurred.

Over the years, the two had grown apart somewhat.

Obviously they were still close enough that Mary wanted OP in her bridal party, but there had been a sticking point between them for a while.

"One reason why I sort of distanced myself from her was because of her treatment of my relationship. My boyfriend, 'Jack,' and I have been together for 3 and ½ years," wrote OP. "He’s a wonderful person, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the man I want to marry, but Mary is under the impression that Jack is 'too good for me.'"

So, Mary tried to set up OP with another guy.

Mary invited OP for lunch with her fiancé and one of his friends, a groomsman named 'Gary.'

When OP told Gary that she was in a committed relationship, Gary was taken aback. He told OP that Mary had set the whole thing up as a kind of double date.

Awkward, much?

"I called Mary later on in the day and asked her a ton of questions about why she thought it was okay to do that."

Mary tried to deny setting them up, but eventually came clean, saying that Gary was more in OP's league.

"I was shocked by her bluntness, so I just told her that I didn’t want to be her bridesmaid anymore. Granted, it was a pretty impulsive decision, but I still stand by it," wrote OP.

What did Redditors think?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, most of them agreed that OP was in the right here.

"Is she jealous or something, because it strongly sounds like it? She not only set you up, she also hurt Gary over this. This is absolutely terrible and if this is some weird 'perfect, upstaging wedding' ploy, she needs to stop now. It is entirely understandable to distance yourself from someone who gaslights and manipulates you like this," wrote one.

"She isn't your friend. An actual friend would be over the moon that you found someone in Jack who sounds great," wrote one Redditor.

"And to top it off, she set up a date for you knowing you were in a committed relationship. That is just crazy regardless of you feel about someone's partner."

Is Mary just jealous?

"Mary is in love with Jack, is jealous of you, and wants to break you up. Skip the wedding and skip the friendship. Maybe stay friends with Gary; he sounds OK," said another commenter.

The Reddit verdict is in: OP is absolutely justified in skipping out on her friend's wedding.
