Women Are Ditching Razors And Embracing Their Body Hair

The beauty world is a-changing.

No longer are women tied to standard beauty norms that have ruled society for centuries.

And we do mean centuries — they were using clamshells to shave during the stone age!

So, what brought this change in modern times? More celebs and regular women are putting down their razors and embracing their natural body hair.

The pressure for women to be hairless goes back centuries.

In Ancient Egypt, for instance, women would use all sorts of depilatories, such as a sticky sugar paste that would pull the body hair out.

Some would even use seashells or pumice stones, similar to what they did in the Stone Age.

Back then, body hair was viewed as uncivilized, dirty, and unhygienic.

This pressure for women to be hairless has carried on into modern times.

It's why the razer market is estimated to be worth $22.5 billion by 2030.

There are so many forms of hair removal, such as shaving, waving, or laser.

"It's been deeply stigmatized -- it still is -- and cast with shame," Heather Widdows, professor of global ethics at the UK's University of Birmingham and author of Perfect Me: Beauty as an Ethical Ideal told CNN.

"Today, most women feel like they have to shave," she said.

"Like they have no other option. There's something deeply fraught about that -- though perceptions are slowly changing," she continued.

One pioneer who helped forge the change — by accident, no less — was Julia Roberts.

The world went nuts when she showed up to the 1999 film premiere of Notting Hill with unshaven armpits.

It sent shockwaves throughout the media industry. She was branded as a "feminist" for the move.

While she hadn't intended to make a statement (she miscalculated her sleeve length), she shared that, "it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself.”

Since then, more women have softened their attitude towards body hair.

The world can thank celebrities in large part for using their platforms on a worldwide scale to break the stigma.

Bella Thorne, for instance, once penned an essay about her love for her body hair.

"If you really want my legs and armpits shaved so badly, you can do it yourself," Thorne wrote.

"I see myself and other girls get hate for having body hair. God forbid I'm not all waxed and oiled up AT ALL TIMES," she wrote.

We can always count on Bella for telling it how it is!

Madonna has never been shy to break barriers.

The OG of the body movement bared the armpit in 2014. "Long hair...... Don't Care!!!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart #revolutionoflove" she captioned the epic picture.

She's clearly taught her daughter to embrace body hair as well, as evident from this picture of Lourdes.

Which is what we like to call great parenting here.

Any parent who teaches their child to love themselves no matter what always gets a gold star in our book.

Celebs aside, regular women are also ditching the razors.

A study has found that nearly one in four women under the age of 25 have stopped shaving their underarms.

Real women have also spoken out about their decision to embrace their body hair.

"It helps me feel sexier and more alive," one woman told Shape.

I say, anything that adds to your self-confidence is an absolute win.

Another woman named Tara decided to let her razor burns heal.

"After decades of causing daily irritation to my underarms from shaving my armpits, I decided to let the rash and razor burn heal," Tara said. "Why had I been doing this to myself?"

"Did I think scabby armpits were sexier than hairy ones? I made the choice to love and accept my body as it is," she continued.

Lastly, women are embracing their body hair because it's natural. "I stopped shaving my body hair because it is a part of who I am," said Debbie, a 23-year-old to Shape.

What do you think about the trend?

Are you into it, or are you not? More than anything, as long as we all respect each other's opinions, I think it's a win.
