Drew Barrymore Has Strict Boundaries With Her Daughters: 'I'll Never Be Their Friend'

Drew Barrymore is a friend to many in Hollywood: Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, and Adam Sandler.

But the two people she'll never be friends with? Her daughters. She shares Frankie, 7, and Olive, 8½, with ex-husband Will Kopelman.

The Charlie's Angels actress recently made these shocking statements on Demi Lovato's podcast.

Come see what she said.

Drew Barrymore's strained relationship with her mother has affected her in more ways than one.

For starters, her mom sent her to a rehab institution by age 13.

Drew vividly recalled the moment where she was locked up by her mother in an interview with Howard Stern.

"I think she created a monster, and she didn't know what to do with the monster," Drew explained.

She also explained that her placement was her mom's last resort, as she had truly run out of options when it came to helping her daughter.

By the age of 15, she was legally emancipated from her parents.

At the time, she resented her parents for it, but she explained in the interview that she now understands where her mother was coming from.

She knows she wasn't an easy child.

It's also affected the way she parents her two daughters.

On Demi Lovato's podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, Barrymore shared that her and her mother, Jaid, were friends and not "parent and child" growing up.

This forced her to "completely relearn what parent-child dynamic is."

"I'm having amazing real realizations about my own kids and how little I understood what boundaries were," she said.

"I didn't have them growing up and when you're a parent, you try to compensate with so much love and you're almost afraid to get into the argument sometimes."

She continued:

"So you let things slide and you're like, 'Oh, there should have been a boundary in that place probably a while ago but I guess I'm only realizing that now.'"

"Like, I'm your parent, I'm not your friend," she explained.

"You can be friendly and do activities, it's not that it has to be this strict relationship."

I'm sure that mentality is something that a lot of parents can relate to.

But by no means does all of this point to them having a bad relationship.

In fact, Barrymore told her daughters before anyone else that her show was nominated for an award.

That's how close she is with her daughters. She just has boundaries, which makes sense.

"I was sitting alone with my two daughters in the kitchen and we were playing with stickers," she said to Entertainment Tonight.

"And I looked up and I said, 'Girls, I'm so embarrassed to say this, but you know how there's, like, awards shows and stuff?'"

"And they were like, 'Yeah.' [I said], 'I just found out I got nominated!'"

"They were so happy for me, and they gave me a hug. ... Then we just went back to playing stickers."
