Hasbro Rebrands 'Mr. Potato Head' Toys As Gender-Neutral

There are many different toys we remember playing with as children. Some of these have been around for decades. As cultural norms are shifting these days, companies are moving into the modern age.

Hasbro is one of those companies. Recently the company announced the Mr. Potato Head line will now be gender-neutral. This shift is definitely spearheading a new era of kids' toys.

The iconic Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head toys are getting a rebrand.

From now on, they will simply be called "Potato Head." Hasbro decided upon this move to remove traditional gender norms from the toys.

Did you know that Mr. Potato Head, first introduced in 1952, was a set of appendages, facial hair, and other accouterments?

It didn't even come with a body, ha, ha. The customers had to provide their own in the form of a real potato. Wow, I had no idea.

Then, in 1953, the company created "Mrs. Potato Head".

Other members of the Potato Head family were also introduced around this time.

And of course, they've released other various accessories and themes over the years. How's that for a little back story on the creation of these beloved toys?

The toys quickly became very popular and remained so for many decades.

They received another boost in popularity by appearing in Pixar's Toy Story movies and its many sequels. Weren't they such a great addition to the family flick?

So why did Hasbro decide on a change to Mr. Potato Head now?

Well, since the culture has now evolved, the company wants kids to see themselves represented in the toys. This move will allow them to create spud versions of their families in their own way.

Their view is that the current branding is limiting to both gender identity and family structure.

Typically, kids that are around two-to-three-years-old play with these toys. At this age, they are starting to learn what it means to be part of a family.

It's a great time to start teaching them about the differences in family dynamics.

Kids usually like to mimic what goes on in their own families. This change will definitely enable them to play out scenarios from their own life.

However, don't be alarmed by this change.

Hasbro also reassured fans of the Mr. Potato Head brand that the iconic Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head characters aren’t going anywhere. They will remain Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head as you know and love them.

Parents can choose between the classic versions of the toys or the new family set which includes two adult potatoes and a smaller, "baby" potato.

So what do you think of this strategy from Hasbro?
