#HotGirlSummer is in full effect, but it has taken a few sacrifices down with it. It was the heartbreak heard around the world when Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth announced their separation just eight months after they married in a private ceremony in December of last year. Miley has wasted no time getting back in the saddle… or yacht, as it were.
Miley and Liam had been together (more or less) for ten years.
They started dating when they were in The Last Song together, which they filmed in 2009 and came out in 2010. They literally met filming a Nicholas Sparks movie, how much more romantic can you get?
They got engaged in 2012 when Miley was 19 and Liam was 22.
It wasn’t meant to be at that point, though, and they called off the engagement the following year. Miley said about the engagement, “I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years, but now I just feel like I can actually be happy.”
During their time off, Miley was rumored to have started seeing model Stella Maxwell.
The two were photographed in a few compromising situations, leading to a lot of speculation about their relationship and Miley’s sexuality.
Miley came out as pansexual in an interview around that same time.
Miley talked about being genderfluid and pansexual to Time , saying, “Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, “Oh — that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.”
Miley and Liam reunited in 2016, and it looked like it was going to be for real this time.
Liam shared lots of photographs of the couple on his Instagram page, usually referring to Miley as his “angel.” No, it’s fine, I’m not crying, I just need to take an unrelated break for five to ten minutes.
They got officially married in December.
In classic Miley and Liam fashion, it was a low-key event, with the public only really finding out about it through Instagram stories.
Miley gave an interview recently about not being a typical housewife recently.
In an interview with Elle Miley said, “My relationship is unique. And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it. I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a [expletive] apron cooking dinner?”
“I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women.”
“People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still [expletive] good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word,” she said.
Miley sparked rumors of a separation when she shared photographs without her wedding band on.
Miley is currently on a FOMO inducing vacation in Italy and, like any of us, her Instagram feed is flooded with pictures. Eagle-eyed fans, however, noticed that Miley wasn’t wearing her wedding band in the shots she was posting.
This weekend those rumors were confirmed by a statement from Miley’s reps.
“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” the statement read.
Miley’s first official statement after the announcement confused some people.
Miley shared a few nature selfies, along with a caption about not fighting evolution, saying that “change is inevitable.”
People were unsure if the environmental message had a double meaning.
The timing certainly seemed suspicious, but some people thought Miley was just using the sudden media attention on her social media to promote a cause that she cares about.
Things were really confirmed when photos were released of Miley getting quite cuddly with Kaitlynn Carter.
If Kaitlynn’s name sounds familiar to you, it might be because she was just recently in the headlines for ending her marriage to Brody Jenner — although it turns out that despite having a wedding, Kaitlynn and Brody were not legally married.
Kaitlynn had shared a few photos with Miley on her own Instagram.
Including this one, captioned, “Rock the boat, don’t rock the boat baby.” It appeared at first like there wasn’t any bad blood between Kaitlynn and Brody, as he commented on the picture saying, “Hot girl summer.”
But things took a dramatic turn when Brody tried to poke a little fun at the situation.
When a friend commented on his Instagram post saying they should round the scandal out by posting a picture of them making out, Brody joked that there would soon be pictures of himself and Liam holding hands on the beach.
Miley did not seem that amused.
In response to Brody’s joke, she said, “Go take a nap in your truck and cool off #HotGirlSummer,” which may have been another light-hearted joke, but given the drama surrounding this situation probably wasn’t.
Fan reactions have been all over the place.
While some people have been brokenhearted about this longtime couple’s breakup, others are delighted by all the drama. To be fair, it is a pretty scandalous event, no matter whose team you’re on.
While the girls’ relationship status is up in the air, it looks like Miley is enjoying her vacation.
Liam hasn’t publicly commented on the scandal, although when asked about the separation he did tell The Daily Mail , “You don’t understand what it’s like.”
We all knew that Hot Girl Summer would have some casualties, but we never expected this.
Some people went even further back to express their heartbreak.
Miley and Nick’s relationship was brought back to the media’s attention when in the Jonas Brothers’ documentary Chasing Happiness , Kevin said, “That changed girls for Nick forever,” about meeting Miley. “I think that kid’s head exploded.”
Some people claimed that Miley’s sexuality is the reason for her split.
Of course, fellow queer singer Halsey was there to shut down that line of thought right away.
Whatever happened between Miley and Liam, it looks like all of Hollywood might end up involved in this one! This break up might be the most ambitious crossover since Avengers: Endgame , and it’ll still have Chris Hemsworth in it.
As for Miley, she seems pretty unbothered.
Of course, it’s easy to be unbothered surrounded by models on a yacht off the coast of Italy. We can only hope Liam gets to enjoy his own Hot Girl Summer too.
