Legendary Actress Doris Day Dead At 97

Movie star Doris Day's charity foundation announced this morning that she has passed away at the age of 97.

The Hollywood Heavyweight is best known for her acting roles in Calamity Jane, Love Me or Leave Me, and The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Day began her acting career in the 1940's, but went on to become a renowned recording artist.

She was awarded two Academy Awards for Best Original Songfor "Secret Love" and "Que Sera Sera". She also released 20 studio albums over the course of her life.

The award winning actress retired in order to peruse her passion for animals.

In the 1970's, Day joined Actors and Others for Animals .

She then started her own organisations, named Doris Day Animal League, and the Doris Day Animal Foundation respectively.

She lived most of her later life out of the spotlight.

After receiving a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush in 2004, she did not make any public appearances or commentary until 2017, when the Associated Press discovered that she was actually two years older than she had originally thought.

"I've always said that age is just a number and I have never paid much attention to birthdays," she said in a statement following the discovery, "but it's great to finally know how old I really am!"

"I'm thrilled to know that people are still watching my films and are uplifted by them."

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Day comments on her legacy:

"I enjoyed working and always tried to do the best job I could with every role."

Her foundation reports that she was surrounded by close friends when she passed.

Day had apparently been "in good health" until recently contracting a case of pneumonia.

She reportedly passed away at her home in Carmel Valley, California.
