At the very first signs of alcoholism, she had the self-control and good sense to cut herself off — which, if you've ever tried to stop drinking, can be a very difficult thing to do.
"My issue is I just love it," she explained. "So much. But the way I do it makes me unavailable for my son."
"My last hangover lasted for five days. I’d earned it: It was a day-drinking session with friends that went into an evening birthday party with one of my drinking buddies," she said.
"I will never be that person who can nurse a glass of wine throughout an entire evening," she said.
"I could have seen myself being a teacher," she said. "Or going into the military. Or being some kind of do-gooder with a death wish."
If there is one thing we're learning about Anne Hathaway right now, it's that she is incredibly self-aware.
One fateful evening, having dinner with Matt Damon and her husband, after years of being a vegan, she figured it was time to allow herself to enjoy some meat.
If she couldn't enjoy alcohol, she decided to indulge in other ways.
It's called balance.
"So then I was the only chick and I’m the vegan and everyone’s just going with the flow. So I asked [she puts on a small embarrassed voice]: 'Is your fish local?'"
"And they said: 'Do you see that fjord?' So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting."
In January, Anne was a guest on The Ellen Show where she opened up about it in even more depth.
"Just because I don't totally love the way I do it. He's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings."
"I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school — I wasn't driving, but I was hungover, and that was enough for me. I didn't love that," she explained.
Big kudos to Anne for knowing what's best for her son and herself, and making the necessary changes.
Giving up such personal insight into your vices is practically asking for trolls to leave their judgemental remarks all over your social media.
Although alcohol can be used in a social aspect and can definitely add a fun dynamic to many situations, it can also be taken too far and affect one's health. So, good for Anne for recognizing those signs and doing the right thing for her and her family!
And it's a reason to reset that 18 year timer until her son grows up and moves out of the house.
Anne announced her second pregnancy in an Instagram post on July 24th to tons of congratulatory messages from friends and fans alike.
Her caption included, "All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love."
Another wrote, "Thank you for your honesty. It's funny how lots of peopl think getting pregnant is a breeze... in a perfect world right?"
It's so refreshing to see a celebrity who acknowledges that they're not perfect and sometimes have to go through difficult times and make hard decisions!
"One of the lucky things about being in this business for so long is that I've really kind of come to terms with the pressure that you get to look a certain way as an actress," Anne said in an interview with Ellen last year.
"But after I had my son, the weight was really slow to come off and so I was a different size than I normally am." Anne then revealed it was one of her Ocean's 8 castmates who helped her feel confident again.
"I was like, 'Really?!' And she goes, 'You got an ass like me!'" Anne continued.
Anne's honesty and openness is so awesome to see. We all need a friend like Anne to help us keep it real (and a friend like Rihanna to build us up)!
