Indian Villagers Knit Huge Sweaters For Chilly Elephants

I always dress my cats up in ridiculous outfits, because why not? One of them hates it so much, the other one doesn't mind as much. But they live with it. I have also bought a ton of costumes for my parents' dogs, who are much more tolerant than the cats. So I guess it is pretty safe to say I get a kick out of animals in costumes.

Well, I was not prepared for this. These are elephants in adorable hand knit sweaters!

Check it out!

It started last year when these ladies from the village near the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura took it upon themselves to make these PJs.

The temperature on the reserve can dip to below freezing, which is much too cold for the elephants.

It took months for these kind ladies to complete their work!

Females Laxmi, Phoolkali and Suzy, the lovely lady elephants pictured here were the first to take the new designs for a spin.

Kartick Satyanarayan, founder of the center to look after abused and sick elephants, said,

"We work hard to give these elephants a life of dignity and protection while we also provide them ongoing treatment and care. This winter we are making jumpers to give the jumbos in our care some warmth."

The best news? "They really took to their jumpers! I know in some countries it is a bit of a joke to wear the most outlandish one you can for Christmas. But the elephants care less about fashion and more about being warm."
