If you’re an avid DIYer , then you know that pretty much everything can be made from scratch or fixed . It’s only when we get lazy or lack skills that we rely on buying stuff.
On the other hand, some folks are just more comfortable hiring a professional to do something that’s still pretty easy. Here are some of those times a DIY could have sufficed.
Here’s one story about what to not call an electrician for.
One careful dad wanted to get an electrician to install towel holders in the bathroom! “Who do we get to install these, would an electrician do that? OMG, I wonder what the electrician would think of that?
How about plumbers? Do they get all the silly jobs after electricians?
I guess so. One person had a friend ask them for a reference for a plumber to change out their showerhead. Well, in their defense, I get my fiancé to do it, hee-hee!
I realize that not everyone is a good cook.
It’s an acquired skill after all, but why pay $3 for two peeled hard-boiled eggs in a plastic bag, when you can buy a tray of 36 raw eggs at Costco for $5 and boil them yourself?
A handyman shared that he once had a call like this.
An A/C tripped a breaker, so the client wanted him to come and flick a switch. He explained over the phone for free what they should do, but they insisted on having him come over and paying $75. Wow.
Do you buy baby food?
Well, if you do, I assume it’s for convenience. But do you realize you can just boil some veggies and blend them in a blender? That’s pretty much how baby food gets made, and it’s super expensive to buy.
Everyone who owns a car knows that an oil change is very important.
However, going to a mechanic all the time can be costly. It’s actually pretty easy to change the oil yourself. You only need a few tools and maybe a YouTube video.
If your phone is acting sluggish, it could be the battery.
There’s no need to buy a brand new phone. All you need to do is buy a new battery for less than $30 and replace it yourself. There are plenty of YouTube videos to help you.
I know it’s nice to get your coffee at Starbucks every morning, but it really adds up.
Instead, buy yourself a nice coffee maker and make your own brew. I bet your wallet is going to thank you so much in the long run.
A lot of people hire someone to clear their eavesdrops.
But it’s really easy to do it yourself. All you need is a hose or a power washer to be able to clear everything nicely. And it shouldn’t take that long either.
Have you ever done your own taxes?
I know it can be intimidating for some people. I felt that way, too. But I really didn’t want to spend $300 to have somebody else do it. Now I use tax software and spend less than $40.
There is absolutely no need to buy prepared salad dressing.
In my opinion, it’s a waste of money. You can totally make it yourself. Mix some olive oil with balsamic vinegar, add any other flavors you like and voilà!
Sewing basics are a lost skill.
I just found out that some people take their clothes to a seamstress, to just get one button sewn back on. I’ll admit my sewing skills suck, but I can at least do that. It’s only a button. Chances are nobody would notice anyway.
