Foster Kittens Roam Canadian Bookstore To Meet Customers And Potential Adopters

Cats in shelters have a number of hurdles to jump through in order to even have a chance of finding a home.

Often, it can be impossible to know the true personality of an animal who is stressed and confined to a small enclosure, but there is also the simple matter that a person needs to be specifically going to the shelter to look for a pet.

That makes serendipitous meetings between felines and their perfect humans difficult to come by.

A bookstore in Nova Scotia has found a novel way to make those special interactions happen.

Otis & Clementine is a secondhand bookshop established in 2011 by Ellen Helmke. Though the store was successful with its casual atmosphere and tasty coffee, in 2019 she decided to add something new: kittens.

Visitors to the store will often discover the furry creatures warming seats and nestled among the shelves.

The kittens aren't just there to be cute, but are actually available for adoption!

I'm mildly allergic to cats, but a runny nose and red eyes is a small price to pay for a visit to see these cuties.

Fostering pets in search of forever homes is a common thing, but usually in private homes rather than businesses.

But the regular contact with people is great for building the kittens' socializing skills and in the end, the choice to try it has been good for business. Many people come for the cats but leave with a book or two.

The kittens are from the South Paw Conservation Nova Scotia (SPCA).

They manage the entire adoption process and make sure that all the kittens are up-to-date on their vaccinations and spayed or neutered.

So far, 30 cats have been successfully adopted since the store started the fostering program.

On average, kittens only stay for a couple of weeks before finding their forever homes and there can be stiff competition in the adoption application process.
