Kelly Clarkson Opens Up On How Her Children Are Struggling After Divorce

Kelly Clarkson speaks out on the emotional effect of her divorce on her children. They are not feeling the best, which is also hurtful for her as a mother.

A divorce not only causes a rift among the couple and hurts the children involved. Singer and songwriter Kelly Clarkson recently opened up about her divorce and how it has affected her children.

The couple tied the knot in 2013 after two years of togetherness. They had a daughter River in 2014 and a son Remington in 2016.

"Personally, it's been a little hard the last couple of months. I've been talking to friends that have been through a divorce. I don't know how people go through that without having some outlet because it is the worst thing ever for everyone involved." she informed Willie Geist. 

Kelly Clarkson says her two children have openly shared their feelings about her divorce from their father, Brandon Blackstock. The divorce took place in 2020.

The 40-year-old singer came on the Angie Martinez IRL Podcast on Monday and spoke about her divorce. She has two children with her ex, an eight-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son.

Clarkson filed for divorce in June 2020 after seven years of marriage. The split was due to irreconcilable differences between the couple.

Communication with her children is essential to Kelly. She said that every night before sleeping, she asks them if they’re happy, and if they’re not, then how can she make them more comfortable?

Clarkson said her children often share how they wish their parents were in the same house. “You know, I’m just really sad. I wish mommy and daddy were in the same house”.

The mommy and singer are raising her children, to be honest. She believes it is an integral quality for children to have, no matter what.

Clarkson relates to their feelings as she grew up in a divorced family.

She said, “sit there, and I'm like, "I get it ... I get it that sucks - but we're going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us."

The Miss Independent singer said she wants to connect with her children when discussing challenging topics happily. She does not want them to feel burdened while examining them. 

“I think communicating with them and not treating them - not treating them like an adult, because they're not - but not treating them like a child,” she said. “They're not small feelings - those are huge feelings, and those are huge emotions.”

Kelly knows her kids will ask if she loves Brandon, as he is their father. “No, I don’t know if that goes away.”

Clarkson did not have a pleasant marriage experience and has said she will not be getting married in the future. Instead, she wants to spend time with her children and teach them good philosophies.

“In my life, I've been through a couple of divorces in my own family as a kid,” she said. “I would love to fall in love. I would love to find someone and fall in love and do that thing, but I have children, and that's why I say that.”

She added, “I didn't have the most positive experience with step-situations and re-marrying, and I didn't have the most positive situation growing up.” We get where she is coming from.

Kelly’s priority is her children, and as much as she wants to fall in love again and get married, she is worried about the impact it will have on her children. They are still young, and she does not want “another dude in the house” with her children.
