Pele, Brazilian Football Legend, Dies At 82

Football fans around the world mourn Pele, a legendary player of the sport, who passed away earlier today. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele's career spanned several decades, between the 1950s and 1970s. He was highly decorated during his time as a football player, with many considering him to be the greatest football player of all time.

Pele's career was full of highs; he'd scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances, according to the BBC. He is also the only football player to ever win the World Cup on three separate occasions, in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Pele Had Suffered Health Problems Over The Past Few Years.

Pele suffered from prostate and kidney issues over the last several years. In 2014, he was hospitalized for a urinary tract infection, following having kidney stones removed. In 2015, he underwent surgery on his prostate.

In 2021, Pele had a tumor removed from his colon. He ended up back in the hospital in November of 2022.

On December 29th, Pele's Daughter Delivered The Devastating News.

Kely Nascimento, Pele's daughter, would frequently update fans on her father's condition, posting photos of him in the hospital. Today, she posted a photo of the footballer's family, writing, "Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."

News quickly made its way to other outlets on social media, including Pele's own Twitter page.

"Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today," the Tweet reads in both English and Portuguese. "Love, love and love, forever." Millions of fans interacted with the Tweet, showing their love and respect for the late football player.

According to the BBC, there will be a public viewing at the Estadio Urbano Caldeira, held by Pele's former club, Santos. Pele's body will be transferred from the hospital to the middle of the pitch, where fans can go to pay respects to his coffin.

There will be a procession through Santos in Sao Paulo on Tuesday, and Pele will be laid to rest in a private burial.

Pele's Legacy Will Live On Forever.

Pele's rise to stardom happened in the late 1950s. Just 17 at the time, he helped Brazil cinch the World Cup victory against Sweden in 1958. During his decades-long football career, Pele represented his country in 92 matches, scoring a total of 77 goals within them.

In 2000, Pele was named FIFA's Player of the Century. He was also voted the greatest football player in a 2020 poll conducted by BBC Sports.

Pele was beloved by his club, his country, and fans from around the world. His name will forever be associated with the sport of football.
