One of the big waves that recently menaced the Hawaiian islands has turned a wedding reception on its head after the surf came crashing down in a stunning viral video.

Every now and then, a wedding will suddenly turn dramatic as something goes wrong in a spectacular fashion. But while this can sometimes involve a stunt that didn't go over as well as the couple intended, it's just as common for an outside force to suddenly turn up and distract everyone from the ceremony.

But what do you do when the one stealing the focus isn't an annoying guest or even a neighbor who picked that exact moment to mow her lawn? What do you do when your inconsiderate wedding crasher is nature itself?

If you're one couple in Hawaii, you recognize there isn't much you can do and try to adapt. But if you're one of their guests, the winning answer is to start recording.

Over the weekend, parts of Hawaii's Big Island were ravaged by large waves that threatened to reach as high as 20 feet.

According to Fox 5, this has meant that some of the waves have been able to clear two-story condos and other buildings of similar size.

As for why it's happening, Meteorologist Jane Minar attributed the rough seas to the last remnants of Hurricane Darby, which Big Island Now reported as passing along the island's southern coast before dissipating in the ocean.

And while one marrying couple worried the after-effects of the storm would bring about heavy rainfall, it turned out they had an altogether different problem.

As we can see in this screenshot of footage captured by Instagram user @k.e.n_n.y.b, the Murphys and their guests instead faced some big waves that easily scaled the oceanfront wall and flooded their outdoor reception.

Within seconds, the tables and chairs they had set up were scattered all over the place and everyone found themselves standing much farther back.

But since the waves didn't hurt anyone, both bride Riley Murphy and groom Dillon Murphy took the opportunity to count their blessings.

As the groom told KHON2, "We were kind of right at the moment where we were going to start moving a couple things and, yeah, this big wall basically just showed up. And luckily there was no food in any of the containers, the cake luckily made it.”

And while it took some cleanup before the festivities were ready to proceed, Riley said the waves' intrusion reminded her what was really important about the event.

So in the end, the couple thought the wedding went even better than what they had in mind.

As Riley put it, "We didn’t have our dance floor, but nobody seemed to mind, at the end of the night we were all like dancing in the mud and it was amazing."

And we can see that good-natured vibe in the full video as well. Because even when it was happening, those in attendance seemed more amazed and amused than upset.
