On February 24th, 2022, in a span of fewer than 24 hours, millions of Ukrainian civilians were forced into becoming soldiers — to defend their homes from the threat of a tyrannical and oppressive regime.

Understanding better than ever before that tomorrow is promised to no one, two Ukrainian soldiers decided to proclaim their undying love for one another amid this terrible crisis by getting married at a checkpoint near Kyiv.

On the 6th of March, 2022, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine entered its 11th day, Lesya and Valeri declared their love for one another in a small makeshift wedding ceremony.

The couple chose to say their "I dos" at the entrance to the capital city of Kyiv.

Surrounded by a small platoon of fellow soldiers and friends, the couple exchanged vows and sealed their marriage vows with a kiss.

Instead of a white wedding, both Lesya and Valeri were adorned in their military-issued fatigues.

The blushing bride was given two bouquets of flowers as the eager crowd cheered and clapped, celebrating the couples' love in the face of decimation.

Also in attendance was Kyiv's mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko.

“They have been living in a civil marriage for a long time," Klitschko explained via social media. "And now they have decided to get married.”
