Wow, in recent years, there have been a lot of movies that pass the Bechdel Test. And today, we’re going to talk about them.
Why? Because you should check them out, that’s why!
But first… What is The Bechdel Test?
Well, the internet defines it as “whether a work features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man.”
Pretty straight forward, if you ask me.
1. ‘Widows’.
Well, this heist movie featuring mostly women is going to have to pass the Bechdel test, because how else would they plan the heist?
Unless they were going to get men to do it…
2. ‘Roma’.
The women in this film hardly ever talk about men.
Instead, they talk about the children their raising, disputes between family over land and all sorts of other stuff.
3. ‘Dumplin’.
Sure, guys are mentioned, but the conversations between women in this story are mostly about body image, self-confidence, and friendship as well.
Consider the Bechdel Test passed!
4. ‘Eighth Grade’.
While the main character Kayla does have a crush on a cute boy, she’s actually more concerned about trying to fit in more than she is about getting a boyfriend.
5. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’.
While most of the film’s conversations revolve around marrying the titular crazy rich Asian (man), there are some convos in this picture that aren’t totally and completely about him.
So… that’s a pass, I guess.
6. ‘Ralph Breaks The Internet’.
Oh yeah, you better believe that this animated movie starring staunch feminist Sarah Silverman is going to pass the Bechdel Test.
Namely when Vanelope and Shank talk about life and friendship.
7. ‘Hereditary’.
Yeah, considering this is a horror movie, none of the conversations really have to do with men or boys or relationships.
So that means whenever two women are on screen, they’re talking about something spooky.
8. ‘Ocean’s 8’.
Another heist film primarily featuring women! Yay!
So, you know the drill, since they have to plan the heist themselves they hardly have any time to go boy crazy or whatever.
9. ‘Suspiria’.
This witch centered horror hardly has time to talk about boys or men and relationships.
The main women are too busy centering their lives around their craft… witchcraft, that is.
10. ‘The Favourite’.
Instead of focusing their lives on silly men, the two women in this movie are vying for the favor of the queen.
Which means they’re too busy plotting and scheming to think about relationships.
11. ‘Annihilation’.
This one passes with flying colors, folks. Not only is it a team of all female scientists, but once they get to business it’s all they talk about.
No men involved at all.
12. ‘Halloween’.
Hmmm… I’m thinking that horror might be the best genre for women. In this one, the mother and daughter talk about staying alive more than they talk about boys.
Halloween … Suspiria … Annihilation … Alien … Hm….
13. ‘Black Panther’.
A lot of the women in this movie talk about what the hero and the villain are doing currently.
Hey, exposition still counts as passing the Bechdel Test, folks!
14. ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’.
While yes, this movie is about Lara Jean and relationships with boys, it also features her talking with her friends about stuff that… well, isn’t boys or relationships.
Mostly real things real women would talk about.
