When mass shootings happen, the first couple of days are the most difficult. Often, information about the assailant is known and publicized first, since it takes time to identify the victims and contact their families.
But 24 hours after the horrific incident in an El Paso Walmart, we are finally able to turn our attention away from the culprit and to the people who really matter.
Among the first victims confirmed dead is 25-year-old Jordan Anchondo.

She was found atop her two-month-old son, having protected him from the gunshots that killed her.
The baby has broken bones from the fall, but was spared from the gunfire.
“He pretty much lived because she gave her life,” Jordan’s sister Leta said.

Leta spoke to The Associated Press while waiting for an update on her nephew’s injuries.
She also said that there is still no word about her brother-in-law Andre Anchondo, who has not been heard from since the attack and is believed to have been shopping with his family.
Aside from their injured son, Jordan and Andre are parents of two other children.

As of posting, only a few of the 20 confirmed victims have been identified.
Victims’ bodies still inside the Walmart may take days to identify as processing the crime scene will take a long time to complete.
Condolences are already pouring in on the last Facebook update Jordan posted.

There have also been reports of fake fundraising accounts being set-up in her honor, so please be careful if you wish to donate money towards her children’s care.
