While a lot of us have been told by our parents to take any job that will hire us, many have found that this isn’t always such prudent or even safe advice.
After all, there are plenty of reasons why workers would feel inclined to quit jobs on the spot and sometimes, the problems with a business or a manager can reveal themselves before they’ve even accepted the job offer.
But as everything gets more expensive all the time, we’ll often find that the biggest reason people will decide a job isn’t for them is money . If a job doesn’t pay enough to live and it costs money to go to it, many are finding it increasingly hard to justify going through the trouble.
And as one woman sees it, the number of businesses who can’t afford to hire you at the wage you require is usually much smaller than the ones who claim they can’t. As she made clear in a recent TikTok video, that led her to seek employment elsewhere after she was offered a management position.

On April 27, a woman named Jayla uploaded a TikTok filmed right after she had walked out of a job interview.

As she explained, her local Family Dollar was hiring store managers and assistant managers and she approached the interview as she would any other.
By that, she meant that she asked the interviewer what the store’s turnover rate was, what their weekly sales averaged out to, and how many hours employees were expected to work.
And while she didn’t disclose the interviewer’s answers, she said she was satisfied with each of them.

That is, until he asked Jayla what her salary requirements are.
To that, she responded, “I’m going to adjust this for inflation, pandemic, all that. I said that out loud.”
And with those considerations and the amount of work she would be expected to do in mind, she told him that $21 per hour seemed reasonable.
And when he said that this wouldn’t be possible for her, Jayla stood up.

In her words, “I said ‘OK, thank you for your time and good luck finding somebody that’s
going to work for that little bit of money.”
Because she wanted it to be known that she wasn’t going to be that person.
Since dollar stores like Family Dollar are infamous for scheduling just one employee in the store at a time, many commenters felt she made the right decision.
But some were skeptical about her expectation that Family Dollar was ever going to pay $21 an hour, to which she replied that the company is worth $26 billion.
So as she saw it, it’s not that they couldn’t afford to pay such a salary, but rather that they were confident they could get away with paying far less.
