What would you do if you found a strange device in your house? Ask a friend about it? Call the police? Post a question on Reddit? Well, one woman did the latter after finding an odd device in her bedroom.
On the subreddit r/whatisthisthing, responses to the user’s question about the device were horrifying and resulted in her life being turned upside-down.
The device was found in her bedroom

The user — who goes by the name M-I-G-Y on Reddit — asked about a suspicious electric device and attached pictures of it to her post.
The device had been found under her bed by a cleaner, who then informed her of its presence.
It clearly had power

In her post the redditor asked, “This was found by a cleaner hidden under my dresser in my bedroom (she told me very discreetly about this which has me concerned), I’ve tried to google it to no avail. Please help, link in comments with all angles.”
It looked like it had storage

The device appeared to be able to store data. The redditor was still unable to identify what the piece of tech was for, however.
The stickers at the back would not help identify it either, hence why she took to Reddit.
Redditors informed her of what it was
Reddit users replied in horror, explaining that the device found under her bed was a mini audio recorder. They noted that the device was not the type to automatically transmit any of the captured audio.
The content would need to be downloaded
Since it couldn’t transmit, someone would need to come back to it and manually download the data. They surmised that meant that it was planted by someone who was close to her and had regular access to her bedroom.
She moved it for safekeeping
The redditor updated her community that she had moved the recorder to her bag and had intended on taking it to the library to download its contents — but it was gone the following day.
She decided to ask her partner about it.
Her boyfriend initially denied that it was a recorder
Her partner passed it off as a thumb drive before saying it was a recorder for his work meetings.
The Redditor wanted to leave the relationship, but unfortunately she didn’t have the money to leave the US and go back to her home in Northern Ireland.
Her online community offered help
Many users offered the user money to help get her out of the situation. She refused, as she wanted her identity to remain anonymous.
Although it wasn’t a permanent solution, she instead opted for staying with a friend for a short while.
While she was there she found more

While staying with her friend, the Redditor went back to look through her partner’s desk. There, she found a manual for a spy camera.
While this was alarming to her community, she assured them that she was saving money from her job to leave.
A supportive community can be a savior
The Redditor said her partner was moving the devices around and all she could do was work towards leaving the house.
A support system, whether online or in person, can help open someone’s eyes on a horrible situation and potentially save them from it.
