Donald Trump hopped onto Truth Social to talk about bringing back Alcatraz.
He’s been going on for a while now about cracking down on crime, and on May 4, he laid out what he wants to do next.
Basically, he said he’s planning to reopen the old Alcatraz prison in San Francisco.
Trump says repeat criminals need to be locked away
Writing on Truth Social, he said: “REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering.”
He looks back at a time when crime was handled differently
He kept going with: “When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.
“No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets.”
Agencies are now being told to start the process
He added: “That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”
Judges and immigration policies also come under fire
“We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally.”
Alcatraz will stand for ‘justice and order’
“The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The prison has a long and unusual backstory
Alcatraz didn’t start out as a prison. It was actually built as a military fort.
Then later on, in the early 1900s, it got turned into a military prison.
By the 1930s, the Department of Justice took over and it started taking in federal inmates.
It was shut down mainly because of how much it cost
Eventually, the place got shut down. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, it just cost too much to keep running.
It was almost three times more expensive than running other prisons, probably ’cause it’s stuck out there on an island.
Getting it back up and running won’t be easy
It won’t be easy or cheap to reopen Alcatraz. And nobody really knows how long it would take to make that happen.
