Donald Trump‘s at it again — dropping hints that he might try for a third term, even though that’s not supposed to be possible.
Trump has thrown out this idea before, and now he’s bringing it up once more, despite the fact that it’s not allowed.
There’s a legal roadblock to a third term
Right now, Trump is in his second term, which should be his last. The 22nd Amendment makes it clear that no president can serve more than two terms.
According to the National Constitution Center, the rule says: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”
Trump has been eyeing ways to bypass the law
But Trump has been toying with the idea of staying in power for a while now. He’s even claimed that he’s already got funds lined up for another run.
At first, it seemed like he was just messing around whenever he brought it up. But now, he’s making it sound like he’s actually looking into ways to make it happen.
He claims there’s growing public support for him to run again
Talking to NBC News on March 30, Trump said, “A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
“I’m focused on the current,” he added.
Trump insists it’s too early but hints at ways around it
When asked straight-up if he’s seriously considering a third term, the 78-year-old said, “I like working. I’m not joking. But I’m not – it is far too early to think about it.”
Then he threw in a little teaser — saying that “there are methods which you could do it.”
Could JD Vance be a stepping stone?
One of those “methods” might be using his Vice President, JD Vance, as a way to sneak back in. Vance could run, win, and then somehow hand the presidency over to Trump.
Trump admitted that this could be one way to do it but wouldn’t spill any details on other potential plans.
A bill could make his third term possible
Helping his case is a newly suggested bill from US Representative Andy Ogles.
Ogles wants to tweak the 22nd Amendment so Trump could stay in office until 2032.
The new amendment would allow Trump to serve longer
Ogles’ proposed changes would read:
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
This change would open the door for Trump but keep Barack Obama and Bill Clinton from making a comeback.
