Nowadays, people worldwide work so hard to fight for disability rights, but there is still a lot of discrimination around the matter, which is why every day, new laws are created to protect their interests and livelihoods.
Companies are no strangers to this, so they have to be careful when it comes to how they accommodate people with disabilities, but as this user on Reddit explained, some people can take it too far and cause thousands of problems.
OP started the post by explaining he recently got a job at a big law firm, and even though everything has gone amazing, he has a coworker that likes to terrify other people. So he called her J and said she was known for getting two people fired from the firm and always getting away with having her way.
J never gets in trouble because she is good at her job and has been in the firm for a long time. The OP also shared that J is a wheelchair user, and alleges that whenever someone tells her something, she says she is being discriminated against because of her disability.
During OP’s first weeks, J was on leave so they hadn’t met, but it wasn’t charming when they did. OP said he has used a stoma bag since he was a baby and was draining it at the disability bathroom when he heard a lot of banging on the door from someone outside. It was J.
When he got out, J started to scream at him because he was using this bathroom and he was a young, healthy man, to which OP replied by showing her his bag and reminding her that not all disabilities are visible.
J was speechless and left, but the next day she put a sign on the bathroom that said it was only for wheelchair users. He didn’t want to make a big thing about it, but he reported it to HR, causing a lot of trouble between J and his mentor.
‘The Discrimination Card’

The Situation Escalated Quickly
After many discussions, J got suspended and was put up for investigation. OP said he never meant to cause her any trouble, but he wasn’t going to be intimidated like his predecessors. He still feels guilty, though, because she could lose her job at a tough time for the cost of living.
OP later returned to the post with an update, telling the users that J is still suspended and that it is very possible she won’t return. Though he feels terrible, he also feels great about it because everyone at the office seems relieved by her absence.
The comments were positive on OP’s side. Many commenters, who happened to be disabled, shared their experiences, saying that they never try to take advantage of others and that OP made the right choices.
They pointed out that it was time for J to learn this lesson and that what she did was illegal. She could get the company sued because she wasn’t authorized to hang up a sign in the bathroom.
The post ended with OP saying that he spoke with HR and explained that he was happy to retrieve his complaint to avoid any trouble to the firm because they have been very nice to him about everything.
