Comedy actress Abby Elliott, who currently stars in the Hulu drama The Bear, shared what it was like to work at Saturday Night Live as she opened up about getting fired from the comedy sketch series.
She spoke about it in a recent interview
The 38-year-old actress opened up about her experience at SNL in a recent interview with The Independent.
It was an intense workplace for her, since not getting cast in a sketch for the week would mean evident stress for the actors.
Elliott expressed that being cast was highly important
“Every week was a new week, and your happiness would depend on whether you got something on air or not,” she told the outlet.
Elliott was on SNL between 2008 and 2012 and is the daughter of actor and comedian Chris Elliott, who was also on the comedy sketch series from 1994 to 1995.
She was always worried about getting fired
“And if three weeks went by without a sketch, you’d think, ‘Uh-oh, am I going to be fired?’… There was always that looming threat of getting fired. That was the worst that could happen. And then, I kind of did,” Elliott said.
She shared how she was fired from the job
The actress did various celebrity impressions on SNL, including those of Angelina Jolie and Rachel Maddow. She now shared how her leaving the job came about.
She had asked boss Lorne Michaels if she could leave, then, she recalled, “I went back to him with my tail between my legs, asking to stay…but after that season, Lorne said, ‘No, I’m going to cut you loose.’”
Elliott now stars in The Bear
The actress, who left the comedy sketch series at the same time as SNL legend Andy Samberg, has moved on to star in The Bear, which is currently streaming its 4th Season on Hulu.
She was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the show.
Elliott shared she never intended on staying at SNL forever
“As much as I enjoyed being on that show, sketch comedy wasn’t going to be it for me. It’s not why I started, and it’s not how I wanted to end,” Elliott concluded as she reflected on her time at SNL.
“Also, I had learnt the lessons I was going to learn…and so I left and, you know, the water was warm,” she added.
