It seems that another artist has taken the opportunity to use the halftime show at the Superbowl for a political statement.
Not that it’s a bad thing, considering the eyes of America are on the halftime show.
So what was it this year? Well, this year, they put children in cages.
The Superbowl has come and gone.
And what a Superbowl it was! There were thrills, chills and some amazing plays by both teams.
It was a rousing game that will go down in history as one of the best.
But you don’t care about the game, do you?
It was all about the food, the commercials and of course, that most amazing of Superbowl traditions: the halftime show!
That’s where the extra views come in.
There have been a lot of great halftime shows but this year, for some reason, felt different.
When we heard that the 43-year-old Shakira was going to be teaming up with the 50-year-old Jennifer Lopez, we lost our minds.
We were excited, but a little apprehensive as well.
What if they couldn’t bring it like they used to?
What if things were different than they were when we were kids? Thankfully, we were so wrong.
When they got chosen, Jennifer Lopez was the first to say something on the honor of being chosen.
“Two Latinas doing this in this country at this time is just very empowering to us,” she said.
Shakira said:
“It’s very important for us to convey a message of unity and also to show what a relevant force the Latin community is in this country.”
But there was one question remaining.
Before they took the stage, Lopez shared a photo of her and Shakira hugging.
“So excited to share the stage with you tonight @Shakira! ✨ ✨ Let’s show the world what two little Latin girls can do. #LetsGetLoud #GirlPower #SuperBowlLIV #SBLIV” she captioned it.
Thankfully, the halftime show was one of the best that we have had in a long time.
The Latinx community was on full display during it, showing what it is to truly be a Latin American.
There was dancing, there was Spanish, Shakira became a meme and JLo did a pole dance routine.
Jennifer Lopez commented on her performance after the show.
She even posted a video of the moments before she hit the stage.
She walks up with her daughter, she hypes up the people dancing for her, and they even did a prayer.
“These moments were captured just minutes before we hit the stage last night.”
“All I want my girls, the little girls on stage with me and all over the world to know is how to use their voices and be proud of everything they are. We are proud to recognize that all of us together are what makes this beautiful country truly great.”
But what did the people think?
Let’s start with Dee Snyder, the lead singer of Twisted Sister.
He, amongst many others online, was not a fan of the half time show for one very big reason.
In fact, tons of people didn’t think that the show was family friendly.
There is a lot of discourse going around about it, leaving fans divided on it.
Luckily, there were tons of people online that came to the defense of the two musicians.
They definitely outnumbered the people who thought that it was not family-friendly enough.
But there was one important moment during the halftime show that got people talking more than any other part.
It was something that no one expected, but something that (most people) loved and applauded them for.
The show had slowed down, and Jennifer Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter Emme Maribel Muñiz sang a slowed-down version of “Let’s Get Loud,” one of her mother’s most famous songs.
Some people didn’t catch the reference of the children in cages at first.
It was a powerful political statement about the immigrant children who are being taken away from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Something people have been sounding off on for the entirety of this year.
There has been a lot said about this performance from both sides of the aisle.
But there’s one important voice we have yet to hear from: the performers themselves.
First, let’s explore Lopez’s reaction to the moment.
“I don’t think we were trying to be heavy-handed with anything.”
She said to Buzzfeed News .
“I think we were just celebrating all that is beautiful about this country — Puerto Rico being part of this country.”
