The Black Widow star Scarlett Johanasson seemed to be both shocked and embarrassed after her husband, Colin Jost, made a crude joke on SNL while she was standing backstage at the live show.
The star was watching her husband, who is also a Saturday Night Live actor, perform his segment when he made a couple of cringe-worthy jokes at her expense.
It was the ‘Weekend Update’ segment
Colin Jost was presenting the ‘Weekend Update’ segment on the live sketch comedy show with co-host Michael Che during the annual Christmas episode.
The sketch involved the two reading out jokes and presenting them as serious news items without having read them before.
Johansson was the butt of a few jokes
If you’ve ever watched Saturday Night Live, you know they make jokes about pretty much everything and Johansson was definitely not exempt from this during the festive episode, which aired on 18 December.
She found herself the butt of more than one joke.
They made jokes about the actress
As they were presenting the sketch for the festive episode, Jost and Che started making jokes about The Avengers star.
Before he told the joke, Jost seemed to be alarmed by what he read on the paper, as the point of the skit is that he doesn’t know what he’ll deliver beforehand.
He dedicated the joke to his wife
Reading the joke out with a bit of nervousness, Jost looked at the camera and began, “I want to dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson.”
When the camera panned to Johansson backstage, he laughed, saying, “She’s so genuinely worried.”
Jost read from the teleprompter
After seeing her shock, he laughed and said, “Hey, boo!” before he started reading from the teleprompter.
The 42-year-old read out, “You all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday… which means I’m about to get up out of there!”
He took the joke right back
Right after he made the joke about the actress’s age, Jost giggled and said, “No, I’m just playing. We just had a kid together.”
The actress was shocked by the joke but alas, that was not the last mention of their relationship for the night.
Jost cracked another joke about her
Later in the ‘Weekend Update’ segment, the comedian had to crack a wild joke, which came up on the teleprompter about his wife’s intimate body parts. The joke seemed to amuse everyone in the audience, of course including his co-host, Che.
Johansson was mortified by it
Jost read, “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu – but I ain’t trippin’… I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”
Of course, this shocked Johansson to the core, making her jaw drop as she gasped, “Oh my God!”
Jost was interviewed on Jimmy Fallon
After this joke, Jost added, “No, no, I’m just playin’, baby, you know I don’t go downtown!” which made fans chuckle.
Later, the SNL actor was interviewed by Jimmy Fallon, who asked him about his wife’s reaction to the joke.
She had known about the joke
“I was obviously surprised by everything, but they gave her a heads-up. They were like, ‘Hey, would you be okay if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’” Jost explained on the show.
“And she was like, ‘Sure! You know, whatever. I’m open to it’. And so then, when it was like the opposite, I didn’t know where it was going,” Jost added. So Johansson knew a joke of that kind would come up, but she hadn’t actually read it.
