If there’s such a thing as the “perfect crime,” we’ll likely never hear about it because nobody will have any clue that it even happened.
Still, although we don’t condone or encourage criminal acts, it’s hard not be fascinated when an outlaw has a plan sophisticated enough to almost succeed.

Still, if we’ve heard about a caper, that means something gave it away. And one mystery burglar might have gotten away with what they tried to do if it weren’t for some concerned neighbors.
On Tuesday, public works employees in Pembroke Pines, Florida responded to a report of a possible sinkhole near a shopping complex.
Since sinkholes can spring up with little to no warning and grow in size just as quickly, there was definitely a good reason to take the report seriously.
However, when they got there, they discovered something that revealed they weren’t dealing with a sinkhole at all.
As CNN reported , the hole had a power cord running through it, which turned out to be connected to a small generator.
When police and FBI responded, they discovered a tunnel that ran for 50 yards and seemed to point to a nearby Chase bank location.
As FBI Special Agent Michael Leverock told NBC Miami, “We don’t know who is behind this at this time, they could have been here a week ago, last night, we don’t know at this time but it is an extensive hole.”
Although this case left the FBI with many unanswered questions, it was clear why whoever made the tunnel did it.
Leverock told CNN that the tunnel was headed for the bank’s ATM, despite not quite reaching the branch.
As such, they’re treating the matter as an attempted burglary.
Perhaps the most baffling thing about this tunnel was its size, which Leverock described as “very claustrophobic.”
As NBC Miami reported , he estimated that the hole was only between two to three feet in diameter.
He went on to say, “I would like to say I saw something like this in movies however this hole is so small, it’s unique. I don’t know how they did it, I would like to put it into words for you, but it is so cramped in there.”
Despite its size, however, the tunnel apparently contained an array of items.
NBC Miami’s Dan Grossman tweeted that in addition to the generator, workers pulled a rake, some muddy boots, and a stool from the hole.
A small wagon and a winch were also among the items found near the tunnel.
As far as authorities can tell, the would-be burglar didn’t make it to the bank because their tunnel collapsed.
According to NBC Miami , recent heavy rain in the area was a likely factor for why the collapse occurred.
The nature of the collapse compelled the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office to send a cadaver dog to the scene.
However, the dog uncovered no sign of anybody trapped inside the tunnel, which could suggest that the attempted burglar is still at large.
