It’s never easy to lose a loved one, especially when they pass away at a tragically young age. Princess Diana was only 36 years old when she passed away, and her oldest son Prince William was only 15 years old at the time.
The future king has opened up about how his experience with this grief has intersected with his experience with parenthood in a new BBC documentary, Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health , set to air on May 28th.

Alongside his wife, Kate Middleton, William has Prince George, who is 6 years old, Princess Charlotte, who is 5 years old, and Prince Louis, who is 2 years old. In the documentary, William opens up about the “overwhelming” nature of parenthood, adding that “having children is the biggest life-changing moment.”
William then opened up about how the traumatic experience he went through with the passing of his mother affected this.
“I think when you’ve been through something traumatic in life – and that is like you say your dad not being around, my mother dying when I was younger – your emotions come back in leaps and bounds because it’s a very different phase of life,” Prince William revealed.
“There’s no one there to, kind of, help you, and I definitely found it very, at times, overwhelming.”
“I think emotionally, things come out of the blue that you don’t ever expect or maybe you think you’ve dealt with and so I can completely relate to what you’re saying about children coming along, it’s one of the most amazing moments of life but it’s also one of the scariest,” William revealed.
When the interviewer assured William that he thinks Diana would be proud of him, William replied, “I appreciate that.”
It’s so touching to see William open up about this tragedy and explain the affect that its had on his own life and parenting experience.
