If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you probably heard about that wild Oval Office showdown between Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Trump, and JD Vance.
The meeting was already intense, with Trump and Vance accusing Zelenskyy of being ungrateful. But then, something else blew up online — Zelenskyy’s outfit.
Zelenskyy faces criticism for his outfit choice at the White House
So, here’s what happened. Zelenskyy showed up at the White House, and some people weren’t happy about what he was wearing. They said it was “disrespectful” that he didn’t wear a suit.
He had been invited to meet with Trump on Friday (February 28), but the whole thing went sideways fast.
The meeting was supposed to focus on the ongoing war with Russia
Now, the actual reason for the meeting was, you know, the war. Russia invaded Ukraine back in February 2022, and the conflict has been brutal.
According to the BBC, around 95,000 Russian soldiers have died. On the Ukrainian side, The Kyiv Independent reported that over 46,000 troops have been killed.
A lot of world leaders, including Trump, have been trying to figure out how to end the war.
Trump starts the meeting with a comment on Zelenskyy’s outfit
But before any serious talks even started, things got awkward.
Zelenskyy walked in, and Trump immediately pointed it out. “He is all dressed up today,” Trump joked as they entered the West Wing.
Apparently, Zelenskyy had been told to dress more formally, but, well, that didn’t happen. Sky News mentioned that he ignored the advice.
A reporter questions Zelenskyy about his clothing
And then, during the meeting, a reporter named Brian Glenn straight-up asked Zelenskyy about it.
“Why don’t you wear a suit? You’re at the highest level in this country’s office, and you refuse to wear a suit. Do you own a suit? A lot of Americans have a problem with you not respecting the dignity of the office,” Glenn said.
Zelenskyy delivers a sharp response to the question

Zelenskyy’s been wearing military-style clothes ever since the war started. It’s kind of his thing at this point.
And he had a quick comeback. “I will wear a suit after this war is over. Maybe something like yours. Maybe better, maybe cheaper.”
Then he basically brushed it off, saying he was more focused on actual important stuff.
The reporter continues his criticism after the meeting
But Glenn wasn’t done.
He went on social media later to keep the conversation going.
In his post, Glenn started off by saying he felt for Ukraine and all the people suffering because of the war.
Then he switched gears. “With that said, the United States has given Ukraine over $120b (some say it’s close to 300b) in assistance. That’s hard-earned tax dollars from Americans. (Which most Americans are against funding).”
He also pointed out that Zelenskyy always wears his green military-style outfits when meeting other world leaders.
Then he wrapped it up with, “You can judge a book by its cover.”
Social media erupts in response to the viral moment

Of course, the internet had a lot to say.
Some people immediately brought up Elon Musk.
On X, @the_resistor posted, “WHY doesn’t THIS guy wear a suit?” referring to Musk. Another user, @DecodingFoxNews, added, “Elon Musk goes to cabinet meetings in a t-shirt and baseball cap.”
Marco Rubio’s reaction steals the spotlight

And then, for some reason, Marco Rubio got dragged into it.
People kept sharing a photo of him sitting on a couch during the meeting, looking absolutely done with everything.

One person, Adam Scherer, joked, “Marco Rubio thought of 15 different ways to take his own life during this exchange.”
The debate over Zelenskyy’s wardrobe continues
So now, everyone’s arguing over whether Zelenskyy should dress up for these meetings or if his outfit is a statement about the war.
Some say he should show respect by wearing a suit. Others think it makes sense for him to stick with his military look.
And yeah, that’s where we’re at. A major war is happening, but somehow, we’re all debating what one guy wore to a meeting. Welcome to 2025.
