When it comes to family gatherings, they can be awkward enough without getting money involved. However, a paid family gathering adds a whole different level of stress. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell relatives no, especially if it’s your pushy Uncle Bob or your niece’s new boyfreind.
One person on Reddit is struggling with a family dinner dilemma right now, and he’s asking for advice.

When it comes to bringing someone with you to a party, or a wedding, or an intimate family dinner it’s always good to double-check if it was specifically mentioned that you can bring one!
Begetting and space accommodations all need to be taken into consideration when it comes to making a guest list, and if the host specifies that they’re not inviting plus ones, it’s best to NOT bring one.
Of course, people are full of surprises and often don’t like being told what to do.
Case in point? The story I’m about to share with you all.
One person has taken to Reddit to ask if they’re in the wrong for making their relative pay for her uninvited dinner guests.
The poster begins by explaining that they recently graduated from college and to celebrate, they and their parents all pitched in to help pay for a nice buffet dinner at a swanky restaurant for their immediate family.
The poster goes on to say they made in clear on the invitations that only the invited guest is to be expected — no plus ones.
To their surprise, on the day of the dinner, their godmother brought three of her coworkers to the event.
While the poster’s dad offered to pay, the graduate stood their ground and said they wouldn’t have it.
Instead, they pulled their godmother aside and asked her politely to pay for her uninvited guests.
“She told me to consider it and this is a celebration, no need to be cheap about it. I firmly told her No. She would either have to leave or pay for them.”
When the bills arrived, the graduate made it clear that the extra three would be on a separate bill, given to the godmother. Unsurprisingly, she didn’t take to this well.
“My godmother was furious that we didn’t relent and pay for her co-workers,” they recalled.
“She started ranting about it. But my dad told me and my mom to go home and he will deal with my godmother.”
Later that night, the poster said their phone was “blown up” with texts from their godmother accusing them of embarrassing her in front of her coworkers.
“Turns out her co-workers ended up paying for themselves even if my dad offered to pay for them,” they explained.
“He guessed that the co-workers of hers didn’t want to make the situation become more awkward and it isn’t a big deal for them,” they explained.
“But my godmother was furious and told me paying for her friend’s dinner is nothing compared to the gifts she gave me since I was little baby.”
Thankfully, the good people of Reddit were quick to assure the poster that they didn’t do anything wrong.
“Who the heck brings strangers to a relative’s celebration? Your godmother was beyond tacky for thinking this was ok,” wrote one user.
“i just had a very similar type of party and a friend showed up with extra people without an RSVP for even himself. i decided not to make a big scene in the moment, but he’s never invited to anything i organize again lol,” someone else added.
Well, this makes me never want to host a dinner again!
