It can be tough figuring out what to be for Halloween every year, especially when you want your costume to be immediately recognizable but maybe not super high effort. It’s always tempting to go as a character or person from an incredibly popular piece of media , especially if that media is scary or frightening in some way — but should there be a limit on which people are taking it too far to dress up as?
‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ is the latest true crime feature to take over Netflix.
The series follows Evan Peters as the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and has been no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to the fact that the real life victims’ families were not consulted for the project .
Due to the show’s popularity, there’s been an increased interest in people dressing up as Dahmer, especially as Halloween approaches.
Due to Dahmer’s signature large, gold glasses frames and blonde haircut, many have found his look or style easy to imitate for costume or cosplay purposes.
But others are speaking out online, and asking people to not choose Jeffrey Dahmer as a costume this year.
Many people are taking to Twitter to express their concerns.
“why are y’all weird ass [expletive] dressing up as Jeffery dahmer for halloween. are we seriously forgetting who he was and what he did?” tweeted one user.
Some family members of Dahmer’s victims have spoken out as well.
“It’s already super triggering to see a hit Netflix series about the serial killer, much less folks dressing like the killer,” mother of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes told TMZ .
What do you think? Is this a costume that’s better avoided, or is it all fair game? Let us know in the comments!
