Trump’s catching heat again, this time for something he said about the Declaration of Independence.
He was talking to ABC News’ Terry Moran, looking back on his first 100 days as President. Most of the chat was just him talking about all the things he’s proud of since heading back to the White House.
But there was one bit that really got people online scratching their heads.
Trump gives a vague and sentimental take on the Declaration
At one point during the interview, they looked at the Declaration of Independence together. And when Moran asked what it meant to him, Trump gave an answer that had folks mocking him online pretty quickly.
Trump said: “It means exactly what it says, it is a declaration, it is a declaration of unity and love, and it means a lot.
“It is something very special to our country.”
The historical meaning of the document is very different
Now, if you’ve ever sat through American History class, you probably know that’s not… quite right.
That document wasn’t really about love or unity. It was more of a formal “we’re done with you” from the Thirteen Colonies to Great Britain.
Basically, it was a pretty bold way of telling the British Empire and the King to back off and stop trying to rule over them.
Social media immediately reacts to Trump’s answer
It didn’t take long for people to jump on this online. One person posted a clip from The Daily Show where Desi Lydic made fun of Trump’s answer.
They added a simple comment: “OMG I’M SCREAMING.”
Users point out the contradiction in Trump’s words
Others on X pointed out that calling the Declaration something about “love and unity” doesn’t really line up with what the document actually is.
One user highlights how absurd the comparison is

One X user joked: “Founding fathers: ‘King George is a tyrant! To arms!’
“Patrick Henry: ‘Give me liberty or give me death!’
“Trump: ‘Let’s write a love note.’”
Someone else replied, saying: “Nothing wrong with love, unity and respect, except that has nothing to do with the actual Declaration of Independence.”
Some take the opportunity to roast Trump’s ignorance
Another person added: “[The Declaration of Independence] is like if someone wrote down a list of everything they hated about you and signed it OH BTW ALSO EAT A D***. Go read it.”
And someone else wrote: “Imagine having the declaration of independence and never having read the declaration of independence. I remember memorizing that bitch in the fifth grade. ‘We hold these truths to be self evident’ mother fkr. Sometimes I really don’t think he’s American.”
